Marketing Your Business with Postcards - the good, bad and the ugly

The postcard has many uses in marketing.  Over the last few days I have been thinking a lot about their pros and cons.  I figured I would share my list about the simple marketing postcard.

A postcard by USPS standards is no larger then 4x6.  So when should you use this potentially very effective direct mail device?

Pros:

  • Postage is lower then any other class of mail
  • Fast and easy to print and mail out
  • Inexpensive to produce in small or large quantities
  • Great for timely promotions or specials
  • Can be used as a reminder to an earlier direct mail effort
  • You can use graphics and text to communicate

Cons:

  • May get lost in your consumers mail pile
  • Limited space to tell your story
  • Size limits room for creativity (although you can be creative)
  • Too small to send to a potential prospect if the message is long or complicated
  • May not perform as well as a larger mail piece (you need to test, test and test)
  • Some marketers rely too often on postcards when other formats would be better suited.

I think the pros win but remember to make sure your marketing goals match the medium.

So, if you have a limited budget, pressed for time or want to get a simple or promotional message across the postcard can be a great asset.  If your product is complex and you have a few marketing dollars to play with go with a different format.  There are always exceptions to every rule so make sure to test and read results.

Stay tuned for the "edge of your seat" posting on double postcards... yes, there is such a thing but don't worry since their use is more limited I will keep those tidbits in my head.

Do marketing postcards work for your business?

Real Works -if the mailings are not targeted then the postcards are junk mail...(a term I hate but if you just dump a bunch of postcards in the mail that is what they are).

CTS- Thanks for the props...

I am sitting over here trying to create something interesting to convert into a promotional postcard for my Ping project. I have 903 registered peeps on Jango and over 1000 people in my business database. I have no idea what to say. It's not the same as doing an open house. Hmm...

I haven't had much luck with postcards, with better luck mailing a standard letter with coupon inside for a complimentary market analysis. It's surprising at how many hang onto that coupon! calling me even 2 years later. It's my number 2 marketing piece.

Carla - awesome.  I love hearing direct marketing success stories. Testing is the key to the direct marketing game.

I have also had people respond to marketing efforts years later.  It is amazing what people hold on to.  Just goes to show timing is everything.

Ihave had a lot of success with post cards.  I send recipes one montrh, then repair tipsthe next. I will jot a note at the bottom about the home I just listed in their neighborhood, then make a note the next time that it is now sold.

Josef!  Thanks for the information on post cards.  I think it's a good bet!  I like the instant visual you get when you receive it.  Good post!

Team Honeycutt - Great to hear and very creative use of postcards.  Tips are easy to read and are a perfect for a postcard.

Olga - Thanks for the note.  The visual is key to successful using a postcard.  You don't have a lot of room to write so the visual needs to communicate for you.

Great post!

Sounds like the old school method still brings in sales and clients. I sent out postcards three years ago which landed a sale in Gramercy Park and two rental!

Since than, everything has gone digital - which makes sending out listings/advertisemnts as easy as 1,2,3...

My experience with postcards is that if you have enough of them, you can prop up a table leg so the table won't wobble.

Jeffrey - yes most marketing has gone digital which makes the postcard and other traditional marketing stand out a bit more.  It comes down to testing and results.

Eric - That is definitely one use...have you tried other forms of direct marketing?

I have not had much luck with post cards.   It may depend on the area.  It does seem that marketing techniques are local.  Good luck!

Evelyn - great to hear you found a marketing channel that works.

Carol - that is why you need to test.  There are definitely geographic differences and preferences.

Very good post!

The issue I have in a winter resort destination is so many post cards are returned.

Very difficult to try and keep up with the comings/goings of the owners.

Jim - Thanks for the note and excellent point.  Their are some data tools available to update mailing lists and to identify addresses as seasonal.  If I have a few minutes this week Ill try to blog how this works.

Living in a house I receive a lot of direct mail from other realtors. Though, I don't think I've seen many of 4x6. Most of them really large ( min 1/2 of A4)
