Live Green - Garden Green Tip

A few "live green" tips I found that are really gardening tips:

Use compost instead of synthetic fertilizers.  Compost provides a full complement of soil organisms and the balance of nutrients needed to maintain the soil's well-being without the chemicals.  Healthy soil minimizes weeds and is key to producing healthy plants, which in turn can prevent many pest problems from developing.

Use native plants as much as possible.  They have adapted over time to the local environment and use less water and require less of your attention.

Focus on perennials.  Gardening with plants that live for more than one year means you don't have to pay for new plants every year. (this is saving a different kind of green!)

Stop using chemical pesticides. Thees toxic chemicals escape gardens and concentrate in the environment, posing threats to animals and people.  Try a variety of organic and physical pest control methods, such as pouring boiling water on weeds or using beer to bait slugs.

Adjust your lawn mower blades to teh 3-inch setting.  Shaggy grass holds moisture longer, requiring less watering.

Water your outdoor plants in the early morning, before the sun can burn off moisture.

Don't overwater.  Before starting your spinkler, step on teh grass.  If the blades sprink back, hold off on watering a day or two.

Happy Gardening,

Susan, using native plants is key. I love them anyway. Aesthetically they just seem to be right, rather than trying, as past generations to importat and adpt exotic varieties. Great post,.
