Ficus Tree - "Friend or Foe"?

Those beautiful, shiny leaves, and big, flowing branches. They can be shaped into all kinds of fun creations to enhance your yard. Are they the tree for you?

I sometimes see Ficus trees planted close to a wall, or neighbor's yard. Not the best location since the tree will be very, VERY large one day. Will your neighbor appreciate all that shade? Ask their permission before planting. Next to a wall? Where are all those HUGE branches going to be when they are fully grown, not to mention the trunk? I have seen the roots of the Ficus trees going through the surface of the yard, cracking the back patios, driveways, and walkways. They have been known to clog the drain pipes, causing back-up and flooding in the yard, and eventually into the house.

The home-owner should be very selective when planting a Ficus Tree. It would be best to plant this tree only on a very large lot, far away from the neighbor;s lot line, away from the home itself, and definitely away from any drainage pipes.
