Ochopee Post Office - Standing Room Only

Ochopee Post OfficeIsn't it cute!?!

The Ochopee Post Office is the smallest post office in the United States.  I stopped and snapped a few pictures of it on my way to Clyde Butchers Gallery in Big Cypress.  This closet-sized, 7x8-foot building used to be an irrigation pipe shed for a tomato farm.  It was turned into a postal service building after a fire destroyed the Ochopee General Store.  The General Store housed the original post office - in 1953.  The building has an airconditioner, light and a computer.  If nature calls, there's the Skunk Ape Research Headquarters is a mile east.  Yes, I asked about the bathroom and no I didn't see the Skunk Ape.

The town of Ochopee sits on the edge of the Everglades.  The population of Ochopee is 11.  Ochopee is 60 Miles East of Bonita Springs Florida.

You used package and snapped in the same blog........................

In all seriousness, that is quite cool.  There are certain things about history that I love, this would be one of them.

And please tell me again why this is so relevant and worthy of a monument?

OK, 11 people in the town, I guess there really isn't much else to do, now is there?

You have to love a town like this. It is my second favorite. It takes a close 2nd to Cleator, AZ.

I'm working my way toward that Sharon.  I have a pile of digital images to get thru, but I did snap photos of Clyde, the gallery and the swamp.  It's coming. I swear.

Chris,

We ought to have a contest with unusual local town names.  There are some neat ones like Ochopee out there!

Chris, with a population of 11 I guess they don't have to worry about standing in line in the hot Florida sun.  I'm assuming clients have to wait outside the building?  You're right, it is cute.
