The Historic City of Kingston: Approximately 90 minutes north of NYC, just off the New York State Thruway Exit 19, the historic City of Kingston is situated along the banks of the Rondout Creek where it enters the scenic Hudson River. The city goes back to the early 1600’s when the first “trading post” was built by the early Dutch settlers, and was the first Capital of NY until the Burning of Kingston in 1777 during the Revolutionary war. Its early history includes the stockade area where limestone and rubble stone Dutch built homes can still be found today. The first meeting of the senate took place in what is now named “The Senate House” located in Uptown Kingston – tours are available to the public. The Uptown Kingston Historic Stockade District provides a variety of old architectural styles with a mix of residential, retail, office and restaurants. Kingston is rich in historical value, including being home to the only 4 corners in America to have historic stone homes on each corner. To get a feel of an authentic old stone house and a great bite to eat, visit the Hoffman House Restaurant on North Front Street. The Old Dutch Church remains a focal point of Uptown with its steeple rising beautifully into the sky. Kingston features many gorgeous Victorian and Colonial homes full of great details created by the artisans of yesteryear but well appreciated by today’s residents. The Rondout area of Kingston is a great place to take a stroll along the Rondout Creek and find a variety of restaurants plus marinas, the Hudson River Maritime Museum and the Rip Van Winkle for a cruise on the Hudson River. Adjacent to the city is the Town of Ulster which provides all of the modern day amenities with an abundance of your favorite restaurant franchises and large retail stores from Lowe’s and Walmart to Applebee’s and the Olive Garden.
