Hanging lighting fixture pendants

Reblogger Cathy Tarrant

This is great info... people often ask about the proper height to hang lighting fixtures....and I think the diagrams say it all.  Sometimes gets the point across better than words!

As a Home Stager in Fairfield county, Connecticut, I often consult my clients to change lighting fixtures in order to update the look of a room. Great looking lighting fixtures are no longer a big expense. Local hardware stores offer great looking, inexpensive lighting fixtures.

Deciding how high or low a light fixture should hang is not easy - I am frequently getting this questions from my clients. So I thought it might be a good idea to write a short blog about the most common locations.

hanging a lighting fixture in the dining room or high bar

When hanging a pendant light or a chandellier if your dining table for example is 30" high, then the bottom of the fixture should be 30" above the table top, which is 60" from the floor.

lighting fixture hight above a kitchen island

Lighting fixtures above kitchen islands should be mounted 6' from the floor.

lighting fixture hight in rooms and entry ways

For rooms, entry ways, stairwells, bathrooms, where people walk under the pendant lighting fixture, it should be mounted at least 7 feet from the floor.

If the ceiling of the room is very high, you can slightly elevate the hight, but I recommend not to lower it.
