History of Daylight Savings Time

I always thought the clocks were adjusted to give the farmers more daylight to work the crops. Not true.

Daylight Savings time begins each year at 2:00 A.M. on the second Sunday in March, with clocks moving ahead one hour. Standard time begins each year at 2:00 A.M. on the first Sunday in November, with clocks moving one hour back.

Hawaii and Arizona do not change their clocks.  It is not mandatory that any state goes to DST.

Benjamin Franklin in 1784 suggested changing clocks to allow more daylight during World War 1 and World War 2. He wanted to save energy costs. Also to reduce the use of candles.

There have been studies that suggest there are less accidents and less crime with more daylight hours.

Today, approximately 70 countries utilize Daylight Saving Time in at least a portion of the country. Japan, India, and China are the only major industrialized countries that do not observe some form of daylight saving.

Old Ben what quite the innovator.  In addition to his proposal of instituting daylight savings also came up with...

bifocal glasses

the lightning rod

the odometer

the Franklin stove

... more.
