Auburn Maine leaf collection has begun!

Auburn Maine leaf collectionPine Tree Waste will collect bagged leaves from Auburn Maine homes along with the regular trash pick up from now until December 1, 2010.  Please keep in mind:

  • No more than 10 bags per week.
  • Leaves must be dry
  • There is a 30 pound weight limit per bag.
  • Be sure the leaves are at the curb by 7:00am on your regular trash collection day.
Auburn residents can also take their leaves to MMWAC at 1 Goldthwaite Road during regular business hours at no cost. 7:00am - 4:00pm Monday - Friday and 7:00am - 12:00pm Saturday.

Bag them up if you must, but why not consider a few alternatives?

Personally, I detest raking leaves!  Many years ago I discovered the sheer joy of a mulching lawnmower.  The mulching lawnmower has blades shaped in such a way that whatever you mow circulates around under the mower and continues to get chopped up and shredded...such a lovely feeling!  No bagging, and more importantly...NO RAKING!

If mowing over the leaves is not an option, here are a few more ideas:

I cannot overstate the pleasure of jumping into a giant pile of leaves.  If you detest raking as much as I do, but have some youngin's around (yours or someone else's,) they will generally rake them all up IF they know they will get to jump in the pile.  What can I say...bribery works!

What to do with the leaves when all of the jumping fun is over?  Here in Maine, leaves make great compost.  Just nab a section of chicken wire or garden fencing about 6-8 feet long, stand it up on edge and connect the ends so that it forms a little circle fence.  Make a game of it and have the kids toss the leaves in.  Voila!  Compost for next year's garden.

If all else fails and you have a neighbor who loves to garden, see if they are interested in gathering up and taking your leaves for their garden.

Where there's a will...there's a way!

My 12-year old entrepreneur and a friend had a leaf-raking business last year. They have grand plans for this year, too, and have been rarin' to go for weeks. We keep telling them they have to wait 'til the leaves are down completely. No one wants to pay twice!

Yikes, same problem here. Leaves falling like rain. I have a leaf blower, a leaf vacuum, but no one but me to do the actual work. Are you ready for this? Itwill take me 3 or 4 entire days to clean them up. I will not start until the last leaf falls off the last tree. What a mess in the meantime.

Well, it's like this -- these doggone palm trees don't drop their fronds, they have to be trimmed.  Actually our Gardenias are still blooming and it's 65 and balmy tonight.  Truth is, I was brought up in Virginia and I'm ready for some Fall weather an those beautiful leaves -- the smell in the air.  I am jealous, sorry.  I know what a pain those leaves can be and I remember raking and playing in the leaves -- a wonderful, innocent time!

Nina:  Great idea!  I'd let them go now, some people dislike raking so much they just might pay twice. :)

Roger:  I always fell for that one as well.  Along with my ingenious mother's "dusting game."

Jill:  You've got to stick with what works :)

Charles:  Look at it this way, you're not waiting, you are simply enjoying the full effect of fall color as the trees paint the ground with their leaves for as long as possible. :)

Tish:  It is so hard for me to relate to palm trees as being something real and not just something I see in movies. :)  Truth be told, I love the leaves...especially since I have no intention of raking and bagging them up.

Kristen...is so agree with you & my kids don't come round to help me with this effort- actually they disappear!  I have to tell you that at a party last night the hostess had fall leaf decorations on the table & the mottled colors were extraordinary (bet it was because of the drought we had this year)...and i actually enjoyed the leaves...on the table!!

Tom:  I'm not sure I could get used to green year round.

Ginny:  Sounds like its time for the mower if you can't CONvince the kids to help. :)

Kristen, I prefer the compost option.  I have a huge (and I mean huge) pile in my backyard that consists of leaves from previous years.  At the bottom of this pile is a large amount of fresh soil that I can dig into every spring and grow my tomatos and peppers in. I would guestimate that it takes about three years for it to go from leaf form to usable soil.  I have more soil than I know what to do with now.

Me too Malcolm.  The leaves in my smaller front yard get mowed down.  My lawn loves it.  I sucker the kids into gathering the ones in the back and compost them.  I love having a giant pile in my little wire fence.  The top layer never makes it all the way to compost there since I keep using it.  I use it all summer, dumping batches into my main compost pile as we go along.  We eat a ton of veggies and compost everything, so we always need brown stuff to keep the compost pile from becoming a slug factory.

Kristen,

I really don't mind raking because I love to burn the leaves in my fire pit. Like many other comments I see here my kids love to rake also. My all to fearless daughter swings from the tree swing and plops into the pile. I wait till they have had enough before I hall them away or do my pyromania thing.

Sounds like a great solution all around Bob!  P.S. - everyone needs their own version of a pyromania thing. :)
