Details on the Parker Road and Arapahoe Road flyover Ramp Project Overview
We are excited to see this flyover become a reality. This intersection is a major problem with traffic being more than the area can handle. With new housing starts and new shopping areas this has addd to the congestion.
In late June 2010, the Colorado Department of
Transportation (CDOT) started the final phase of the
Parker Road/Arapahoe Road interchange improvement
project. The project will construct a grade-separated
interchange that carries Parker Road over Arapahoe Road.
The corresponding ramps will also be constructed to
complete the full interchange. The project is scheduled to
be complete by the end of November 2011.
What Work Has Been Completed?
Since the project began, crews have made significant
progress constructing the new ramps at the interchange.
Some of the ramps will soon open to traffic to help
alleviate congestion at the intersection once construction
of the new Parker Road bridge over Arapahoe Road
begins the week of October 24th.
Currently, the ramp from northbound Parker Road to
eastbound and westbound Arapahoe Road is complete
as well as the ramp from westbound Arapahoe Road to
northbound Parker Road. The ramp from eastbound
Arapahoe Road to southbound Parker Road has been
paved, but has not been tied into Arapahoe Road yet.
Major Traffic Realignment Scheduled
On Saturday, October 23rd and Sunday, October
24th, crews will be realigning Parker Road to the west
approximately 200 feet and eastbound Arapahoe Road
to the south approximately 25 feet to accommodate
the construction of the new Parker Road bridge over
Arapahoe Road. This temporary alignment will be in
place through May 2011.
INTERCHANGE IMPROVEMENT PROJECT
To complete the realignment, the following lane closures
will be in place on Parker Road and Arapahoe Road from
6 a.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. on Monday:
• All lanes of northbound Parker Road will be closed
at Arapahoe Road. Motorists will take the new ramp
from northbound Parker Road to Arapahoe Road
where they can go east or west on Arapahoe Road or
return to northbound Parker Road.
• Various single and double lane closures will be in
place on southbound Parker Road.
• Eastbound Arapahoe Road will be reduced to one
through lane.
• Westbound Arapahoe Road will be reduced to one
through lane.
Details of New Traffic Alignment
Since Parker Road will be realigned to the west, there will
be some temporary changes in the traffic alignment. Here
are the details of the temporary alignment:
• Northbound Parker Road:
northbound Parker Road will remain open. Motorists
needing access to either eastbound or westbound
Arapahoe will have to take the new ramp, which is
located south of the existing intersection.
• Southbound Parker Road:
remain open on southbound Parker Road as well as
one left turn lane from southbound Parker Road to
eastbound Arapahoe Road (this will create delays
during peak hours and alternate routes are advised).
The existing triple-lane ramp from southbound Parker
Road to westbound Arapahoe Road will remain open.
• Westbound Arapahoe Road:
remain open on westbound Arapahoe Road as well
as the two left turn lanes from westbound Arapahoe
Road to southbound Parker Road.
• Eastbound Arapahoe Road:
remain open on eastbound Arapahoe Road as well
as all three left turn lanes from eastbound Arapahoe
Road to northbound Parker Road. There will still be a
turn lane for motorists needing access to southbound
Parker Road.
With this temporary configuration, major delays are
expected, especially during peak hours and alternate
routes are strongly advised.
This rendering shows how the interchange will look when complete. Many of the ramps are already complete and will open to traffic on October 25th.
