Paying it forward - Great Pumpkin style

Now imagine this pile times 100, I really should have taken a few pictures :)This was not anything that we had planned, as a matter of fact it started out as a joke. A friend of ours grew pumpkins this year and had a huge crop, knowing that Liz likes to can and to bake he called and asked if she would like some pumpkins. Well of course she said yes. Here comes the joke part, He brought over an entire truck load of pumpkins while we were out and put them on the walk way in front of our house. (I am quite sure that our neighbors thought we were crazy when they saw the pile)

We needed to find a good home for the some (OK Most) of the pumpkins, so we have started donating and giving away pumpkins. A dance troupe from Africa (children who have lost their parents) ended up with several to enjoy carving (we heard that most of them had never seen a pumpkin), which was really fun for them. Anyone we know with kids gets pumpkins.

Some clients I have called have declined, saying they had enough pumpkins, but this gave us a chance to reconnect and chat. To catch up on things in thier lives and ours. They appreciated the thought!

We have gotten to meet several of our neighbors and have reconnected with others. It has been great fun playing the great pumpkin and giving out pumpkins to local groups and to our clients, neighbors, friends and family. Next week when we carve a couple of the pumpkins that were best suited for carving I will have to remember to take pictures to post. Happy Halloween, and if you are in the Saint Cloud MN area and would like a pumpkin or 2 give me a call or shoot me an email, as the freezer is full.

What a great idea, I never would have thought to call and offer a pumpkin to my clients.  That's so original!  Wish I was closer, I'd come get some to share with my neighbors and clients.  Happy Halloween!

As I said Erika, it was a happy accident. Well, maybe the true definition of Pat-it-Forward, in that our friend dumped all of these pumpkins in our lap. It's been fun handing them out. Happy Halloween to you and your family!

Very cool story. Kids and pumpkins just go together. I bet the neighborhood kids were jealous when they saw that stash!

Mostly the "big kids" Jason.  People walk by when we're in the yard and comment, and we invite them to come help themselves.

Steve. If I were in St Cloud I'd take a bunch. I was just thinking that I should go get a few more baking pumpkins before the season is out. How do you freeze them? I still have some freezer space. I though one just had to store them like squash.

Very cool.

Some people may not have bought a pumpkin, but by you offering them for free they can enjoy the holiday even more.

You've just made a deposit into your account at the Bank of Kharma!

Great post Steve!  Can't wait to see those photos of the pumkins you've carved - that's one of my favorite Halloween activities!

I am jealous,  I have yet to grow pumpkins successfully!

Carving pumpkins is one of the greatest joys of fall to me.  You should be proud that you were able to give such a gift especially to those experiencing for the first time!

Lindsey-What we do is bake them (quartered) and spoon out the meat into sealable containers (or ziplocs) and freeze. The skins go in the compost or out to feed the deer.

Ralph-We aren't sure what our balance is, but we add to the account when we can, and try not to make withdrawals:)

Karen-We can put all those little candles to good use, too:)

Hillary-Honestly, we dodn't grow them. We're "re-gifting". But, we are saving seed, for roasting and planting our own pumpkin patch next year.

Richard-Thanks for your noce words, but we're just having fun:)

Melanie-Our neighborhood has never been this orange. The adults seem to enjoy it equally.

What a wonderful Pay It Forward!!!  Need 3 here in Wrightsville Beach -- guess that's more than a day trip; rats!  Suppose I'll have to find a Pumpkin Patch.  Can only imagine the faces of those precious children as they experience carving their pumpkins.  We bake the seeds and use the pumpkin to cook; love it.  Blessings to both of you.

Steve, What a fun story … your friend delivering an entire truck load of pumpkins … you were “punked with pumpkins” and then paid-it-forward by sharing with the community.

Tish: If possible I would deliver them to you in person. What fun that would be:) We have been using some of our pumpkin bounty for pie and seeds also. Yummm! You PayIt Forward very nicely yourself! Blessings to you and CA.

Kathleen: We loved getting them all, and in fact asked for pumpkins, but failed to specify how many! We did not count on this much pumpkin love:)

Good call on donating to a dance troup. St. Cloud is a little far for me to get charity gourds, but I hope you get cleaned out soon. Definitely need to get a few for the weekend; delinquent on that.
