Separation of Church and State.

I was notified about the enclosed link to an article about a woman here in our area who advertised on her churches bulletin board seeking a “Christian” roommate. Somehow by way of a churchgoer the Fair Housing center of West Michigan is filing charges of discrimination against this person. At this time all I will say is that this will get heated and maybe not the publicity this or any city needs.

As I am a Christian myself (and yes very proud of it I may add) the implications here reaches further than our borders. Possibly this may have national implications. I try my best not to get into too many discussions over the difference as the issue between Church and State have been hotly debated for decades. Is there a wrong or right way to look at this? Possibly. There are so many opinions (go to www.woodtv.com) on this. Over 246 and counting. They will be coming out of the woodwork on this one. I actually had a friend of mine who alerted me to this situation and was directing some of their frustration on me (as I am friends with the Director and staff). I had to rein them in. I gave my outlook on it and I told them like I reiterated here.

Be prepared. I’m hearing the ACLU is getting involved as well. Hopefully a resolution can come of this. Hopefully soon.

Robert,

I'm curious if she is looking for a roomate and not renting a unit per say how could they possibly file suit for discrimination?

I read the article and can only say, that as a private home owner, you can advertise for any kind of room mate you want.  However, if you are a REALTOR, as we know...you certainly can't and must adhere to all fair housing laws.  It is my feeling that this entire thing will go NOWHERE.  Who ever this lady is from the fair housing commission needs to get to work on real problems.  If she is perusing church bulletins she doesn't have enough to do.  I would guess she may have some other motive for stirring this pot!

As for the ladies attorney who is complaining, he/she needs to go out and find a real client to represent!

In closing, I have to think that 24 Hour News 8, must be running out of headlines for the 5 o'clock news.

Thanks for sharing!!!

Robert..this has not hit our Metro area  stations, but chances are.... all one has to do is to look in the personals in most papers to see other roommate ads " non-smoking", WSF, BSF, WSM, BSM, so on and so forth.  since these type ads still exist, then all that could be concluded here is that somehow this woman is willingly limiting her choice to one religion over any other.  If it is her apartment, house or living place,  she has that right.  If she is renting apartments in a multiple housing unit then she will be in trouble.
Sad to think that we may indeed have come to this state where the Fair Housuing agency can dictate to you in your own home. This is concerning Please, if you feel so inclined, do keep us up on the resolution if this non-problem.
You and yours have a great Sunday.

I heard this on the news, well the teaser and didn't realize it was in Michigan.

People advertise for all sorts of room mates on the internet and there is no violation. But, you know Christians are fair game these days.

The fact she advertised in her church bulletin which is also a voluntary association and some federal housing agent was snooping around is beyond disturbing.

Robert ~ for some reason I failed to comment on this post yesterday.  I even clicked on your link and read the comments there.  This is such a crap.  If I own my house and I am advertising for a roommate, I should be allowed to "discriminate" (choose with whom I would feel comfortable sharing my home and giving access to my personal property).  I don't feel that this person's advertising for a "Christian woman" (especially when the ad was in a church bulletin) should be called out for this.  This has just gone way too far.

Beyond disturbing is right! Now, people can't decide who they allow into their own abode?
