Did you know? — San Diego's Lindbergh Field ranked fifth best airport

San Diego's Lindbergh Field
ranked fifth best airport

http://www.missionvalleycondos.infoCondé Nast Traveler magazine recently named San Diego International Airport, Lindbergh Field, as the nation's fifth best airport. Their ranking was based on a poll of over 26,000 business travelers. This is the fifth consecutive year that Lindbergh Field has been in the Top 10, which is kind of ironic since San Diegans like to criticize the airport for:

  • its single runway (it is the nation's busiest single-runway airport),
  • its lack of international connections (you'll have to fly to Los Angeles,
Phoenix, Las Vegas, or farther for the best international flights),
  • http://www.missionvalleycondos.infoits close proximity to downtown skyscrapers (we all think its dangerous to fly that close to skyscrapers),
  • its lack of restaurants (eat before you go to the airport!),
  • and the lack of any room to expand the airport as future needs (many of us would say "current needs") demand.

One of the respondents said that Lindbergh Field is great because you don't have to walk far from the airplane to luggage pickup. While that might be true, some of us have been known to wait for more than an hour at luggage pickup for our luggage to show up!

http://www.missionvalleycondos.infoThe City of San Diego has spent millions of dollars studying expansion and relocation, and we even got to vote on relocation a few years ago. Unfortunately, we were asked if we wanted to move the airport to the Miramar Marine Corps Air Base. Uh, that's being used, and the Marines stated that they weren't going anywhere. We voted it down.

http://www.missionvalleycondos.infoRight now Lindbergh Field is in the midst of a $1 billion renovation which includes adding ten gates, another exit ramp for cars leaving the airport, and more concessions, especially in Terminal 2.

Ironically, Lindbergh Field recently made another list as the nation's tenth most dangerous airport; see The History Channel's Top 10 "Most Extreme Airports." The History Channel cited the single runway, which is also relatively short, and the Laurel Street parking garage at the end of the runway where planes typically are coming in for a landing. The parking garage has several levels and is about 200 feet tall, making it quite interesting for planes to land safely.

http://www.missionvalleycondos.infoHowever, if you're flying into San Diego, try to get a window seat on the left side of your airplane. The view of downtown San Diego and the harbor is absolutely beautiful!

Top 10 Airports:

  1. Portland, Oregon
  2. Reagan National, Washington DC
  3. Tampa, Florida
  4. http://www.missionvalleycondos.infoOrlando, Florida
  5. San Diego, California
  6. Las Vegas, Nevada (McCarran)
  7. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
  8. Seattle-Tacoma, Washington
  9. Salt Lake City, Utah
  10. Detroit, Michigan (Metropolitan)

Jim, nice post!  I had no idea that San Diego had no international flights.  I have never flown into or out of it, which may explain my ignorance on the matter.

Flown in/out of there a lot.....my daughter spent 4 years at UCSD and it was always a little tense flying into San Diego...past all the downtown buildings.  Like a ride at Disneyland!

They'll get no argument from us. We've never been disappointed with our flights in or out of Lindbergh. We do make sure we get in early enough to get our rental car.

I saw a program on the History Channel about the top 10 airports and of course, SD is right there in the middle! They had some interviews with different pilots about flying in and they said landing in San Diego is one of the most challenging to land, not hard, but challenging because they have to make such a quick descent once you pass the high rises and the freeway!

I do have to agree, it is one of the easiest airports to get around! And you can't beat the view!

I remember the first time I flew into San Diego... I was 15 going on 16 and travelling alone to play in the Junior World Golf event at Torrey Pines.  I was scared to death as we descended right over the city... but by the time we landed I thought it was cool!  Kathy

Thanks for stopping by, everyone.

I’m trying to catch up on old posts to see if anyone had a question or if there are some comments that need a response. If so, I’ll respond in a comment below this one.

Also remember that I return comment for comment, so I'll be by your blogs to read and comment soon. I'm exactly 30 days behind right now, but I usually catch up during Thanksgiving and Christmas, so you'll definitely hear from me soon.

And if you need a cat book for Christmas for that special cat person in your life — even yourself if you're your own special cat person in your life! — I can highly recommend “The Cat Lover’s Book of Days,” by our own ActiveRain Member Peg Silloway. It's a book that you can use year after year, and never get tired of, because there are no years in it, only days. It's great!
