When you Make Assumptions, What Do You Do?

By

Many years ago, when I was a sweet, naïve 21 year old woman, I worked for a very mean man.  Bob loved to ridicule his employees in public.  His favorite thing was to ask, “When you assume things, do you know what you do?  You make an ass out of u and me.”  After only one year, I simply could no longer watch this man abuse his employees so I quit.Jack Ass

Years later, I realize that there was some wisdom in what Bob had to say even if his tactics were mean and abusive.

A few years ago, I worked with a millionaire investor.  He traveled from California to Indiana to buy an apartment building.  It quickly became obvious to me as to why the man was a multi-millionaire.

He refused to get a hotel room—but rather got permission to sleep on the floor of one of the empty apartments.  He refused to rent a car.  Instead, he walked to a garage sale, bought a bicycle and a baseball hat and rode his bike where ever he needed to go.  McDonald’s was his restaurant of choiceHe dressed in Hawaiian shirts, Bermuda shorts and sandals.

I watched his interaction with others and it was no surprise to me that he received very little respect where ever he went.  People assumed he was a homeless person and not due their respect.

Flash forward to today.  My ATM card would not work.  I will spare you the boring details, but it took over an hour and a half to get the problem corrected.  For at least the first hour, it was obvious to me that the bank employees assumed I had forgotten my pin number.  They seemed very impatient with me. I could read in their faces that they considered me to be lacking upstairs.

Once they determined the problem was with their ATM, they fell all over themselves trying to make it up to me.  I have not decided yet, but I might be switching banks.

We should not make assumptions.  We should not assume first time buyers are not informed simply because they have never purchased a home.  We should not assume a buyer who has purchased several homes knows or remembers everything there is to know about the purchase. This list could become very long, but I think you get the idea.

When we ASSUME things……

So, so, so true.  Assumptions are the root of many misunderstandings, and the beginning of some of our worst mistakes, I assume.

It gets old people valuing you at your net worth.  At least you can avoid those superficialities by looking average.

Well said, it reminds me of a quote, "Never assume the obvious is true".  I like this blog presentation by the way, it's easy on the eye and seems to be arranged with forethought.

Your former boss was right, although he sounds a little . . . off.  This saying was something I learned young too.  Not sure where I first heard it though.  Must have really impressed upon you for recalling it years later.  The guy on the bike is a hoot.  Never thought about that as a means of transporation when visiting another area!  :-)

Pat, I'd sure be tempted to switch banks, even though it's a hassle.  And I learned by watching a colleague assume a guy was a bum because of the way he looked and, um, smelled.  He was heir to one of the largest fortunes in the country.

I'll tell you right out of the gate that I make a lot of assumptions all the time. Quite a few are correct, but not all of them. The thing I have going for me is that when I'm wrong about them, I can laugh at myself and make sure the proper steps are taken to keep everything going.

Pat, that old saying with assumption is very true and we need to go slow with what we first think or others think cause often we are completely wrong.

Great post Pat and here's another with equally as much wisdom. "It's better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid, than to open it and confirm it". I enjoyed your post and the comments tremendously.

Keith---Well, unfortunately, I never looked like an Oprah Winfrey or Ivana Trump.....

Dee--I like your quote!  I also like your 'plum' font.   Thanks for the kind words.

Pat--My worst blunder was not related to RE---I once commented on how much a daughter looked like her mother---turns out they were SISTERS!!!

Michael--I know I sure do!!

Carla--Is that what the call eccentric?

Eric--We are all guilty.  I just hate when it happens though!!

Made the mistake of thinking some buyers were not qualified, and turned out they could buy something. Also, wasted a lot of time with people who talked big, but turned out had no ability to buy even a starter home. Wealthy people don't always look that way. Look at Sam Walton.... the story was he walked into a brokerage in Fl., looking like a bum, driving a beat-up truck. He contacted the realtor several times who told the receptionist to tell him he was busy. Turned out later, Sam was looking to buy a building to open a Wal-Mart store.

Anyone see pretty woman, with Julia Roberts... how she stopped by the store and the ladies kicked her out, then the next day she spent a fortune on clothing at other stores, and came back by to show them they made a big mistake?

Its sure  judgement call sometimes. Unfortunately, most often, your first instinct may prove to be correct, but its worth spending a little time with everyone, and definitely worth giving everyone respect.

Pat  I could write a book on the subjwct - we all experience this at one time or another.  It seems to be worse nowadays with all the electronic devices that are suppose to improve our lives.  I remember the good old days when the most serious problems were caused by the point breaking on the #2 pencil.

Pat...

I came from the days of women not being able to buy houses, cars, rent apartments, without a man in tow. Believe it or not I just had something like that happen to me. I was Golf Cart shopping and chatting it up with the Salesman. I was asking him about interest rates on his in-house financing. Instead of answering the question, he looked at me and said: "You should come back with your husband." Seriously. Yo Dude, neither my husband, or myself, will be buying anything from you. This is NOT 1947 :)

Ooops. In my head all of that tied in with your post. Unfortunately, my silly little head just can't remember what I was thinking. I need my husband. I can't think, speak, type or do math without him. Or so some people assume :)

TLW...ROAR!

I had one of those investor types, bought 5 houses from me, and you would have thought he didn't have 2 nickles....he wouldn't even let me give him closing gifts, he told me to invest the money...gotta love him.

Eugene--You are right, it can go either way---people who look qualified but aren't, people who don't look qualified and are.  We should trealt everyone with respect and compassion.

Karen--I suppose one day we will have an instrument to stick in someone's ear to tell us if they can be approved for a loan!!

Christine--And as said before, beauty is only skin deep!!

TLW--When I first got into real estate, my 'idol' told the story about going in to buy her son a car a planning on paying cash.  The salesperson would not look at her---kept talking to her husband and ignoring her.  She finally told him she would be the one writing the check!!  Things have improved....slightly. :-)

Liane--My investor was not so generous.  I think I actually paid for his Big Mac. :-)

Jon—I owe it all to you!!  This turned into a very popular post with lots of interesting comments.  Thanks for your help and encouragement.  You are my hero---well, one of them anyway. J
