The city of Anoka is located in southwestern part of Anoka County where the Rum River empties into the Mississippi River. It is an old historic town that was settled in 1844. Father Lewis Hennepin first visited the area in 1680 when it was inhabited by the Dakota Sioux. Later, it was the home of the Ojibwa. It is fitting that the name Anoka comes from two Native American words - the Dakota word meaning "on both sides of the river" and the Ojibwa word meaning "working waters". The area became a neutral area for the two Native American tribes.
Sawmills filled the early city, later potato farming and shoe making were major industries. In 1920, Anoka held its first Halloween festival as a move to stop all of the Halloween pranks. It is now known as the "Halloween Capital of the World"
Anoka is situated on approximately 4270 acres and is located about 20 miles northwest of the Twin Cities. As the county seat, its population is 17,899 (2005 estimate). The largest employers include the County of Anoka, the Anoka Hennepin School District, Hoffmann Engineering, and Federal Cartridge.
