I'm sure you all have heard of the tremendous problem the NorthEast - New York, in particular - has had with bedbugs. According to friends I have who live in Manhattan, the problem has been brewing for years. And now the island is infested with these small insects.

Thankfully, I've never had to deal with it but I wondered why it's such a problem and how does a homeowner approach a problem like bedbugs. So I did some digging and here's what I found out.
Bedbug infestations have exploded in recent years and we're all susceptible (it's not just a city/New York problem). The first step in approaching bedbugs is to determine if you have an infestation and its severity.
Therefore, look for the little critters. You can actually see bedbugs with the naked eye but it is recommended to use a flashlight for better visibility and ease. Also look for small black and brown spots (bedbug droppings). Experts recommend checking beyond your bed and look at your baseboards, other furniture in your bedroom, and any cracks where the bugs could be living.
Exterminators recommend washing your sheets, towels, clothes - everything - in hot water and then drying the items for a half hour on high heat. Additionally, those items should be stored in closed plastic bags until the bedbug extermination is complete. Sounds fun, huh? Well, it gets better.
