These two small residential towns are located in the southeastern Anoka County. Circle Pines has a population 5,072 (2005 estimate) and covers an area of approximately 2 square miles. Lexington's population is 2,214 (2000 census) and covers less than a square mile.
In 1946, Circle Pines began as a cooperative village where housing costs were specified and homeowners were required to purchase at least one share in the coop. The founders created the village "to unite the habitation benefits of a functional and contemporary community with the economic advantages of a consumer's cooperative." Today it is a mature residential community covered by wetlands with fields of oak and elm trees. The city is approximately 2 miles square and about 33% covered in wetlands. Circle Pines operates its own natural-gas distribution company and is the only Twin Cities suburb to do so.
In contrast, Lexington is situated on the Great Anoka Sandplain which is why there are no wetlands or lakes. In 1847 a survey crew concluded that the land was "almost unacceptable for either men or beast, except when frozen up". The sandy soil was not very good for farming. Nevertheless, in 1875 Greenberry Chambers, a former slave from south central Kentucky and a private in Company H of the 15 th U.S. Colored Infantry settled on 18 acres in the area where he and his family attempted to make a go of farming for the next 9 years.
