LEE PERMITTING SLOWS AFTER JUNE RUSH   

FORT MYERS, Fla. (Sept. 4, 2007) - During August, Lee County Community Development issued 63 permits for single-family homes to be built in unincorporated Lee County, Bonita Springs and Fort Myers Beach.  That is the lowest monthly number of single-family home permits issued by Lee County since November 1981, when 45 were issued. 

Residential permits were valued at $16.9 million.  There were 135 permits issued in July 2007 and 588 issued in August 2006.

About 58 percent of the single-family home permits were for construction in Lehigh Acres.

There were 150 multi-family units permitted in August, compared to 20 in July and 308 in August 2006.

Permits were issued for 23 new commercial buildings valued at $19.4 million in August, compared to $6.8 million in July 2007 and $21.5 million in August 2006.

In the first eight months of this year, Lee County issued 21,902 building permits of all kinds, valued at approximately $1.9 billion.  At this time last year, the county had issued 32,508 building permits valued at approximately $3 billion.

Lee County Community Development oversees planning, zoning, and development services, such as permitting, development and environmental review, building inspection and code enforcement in the unincorporated areas of the county, and permitting services for Bonita Springs and Fort Myers Beach.
