It's all how you look at it..

These days many of us seem more wrapped up in making a living, than making a life.   I wonder what's more important?

Making a living and putting food on the table is certainly important, but equally important is the kind of life we lead.    Given the choice between money or a fulfilled life, I think I'd choose the latter.   Although there's nothing to say you can't have both.

The trick is to achieve a balance between the two.     A life spent in the pursuit of fortune strikes me as a pretty insulated existence.    On the other hand a life spent purely on hedonism is without question an insult to humanity.

Finding just the right mix of earning income and life enjoyment is a little like walking a tight rope.   Of course there are those who enjoy their work so much they find true pleasure in their achievements.......however, it's important not to get so wrapped up that those around us suffer.

Lately I've been setting aside an hour every afternoon for a short nap.   I find it refreshes me and creates more energy for the rest of the day.   I also try (not always successfully) to work in a short walk.

My wife loves to tease me about singing in the shower    I'm a terrible singer, but that's OK it's a great way to set a positive mood for the day.

I call or write to at least two friends every day just to keep in touch and meet with different friends twice a week, even if it's only for an hour.   In fall, our weekends are generally for getting out for a drive in the country or a quiet walk.   We choose a different path each time.

In my working world I set time limits on each project.   Today for example I'm helping an affiliate prepare for the big SEMA Show in Las Vegas.   I will give this two solid hours of intense focus.   My daily routine is also varied to avoid falling into a rut.

When you organize things in advance it's amazing how much can be accomplished with time to spare.   That one hour of "Think Time" I employ every evening really does work.

It may interest you to know that I'm also the chef in our household.   It's a luxury I enjoy doing, except on weekends when my good wife takes over.     I also enjoy house cleaning, doing laundry and other household tasks in between my work endeavors.  It's a way of breaking up the day so nothing becomes a chore.  Finding alternate tasks can be a recreation.

What this blog is suggesting is to vary your day....   Focus when focus is necessary, but include other activities in the mix so each moment is fulfilling.   The more interests you have.....the more interesting you are as a person.
