Dog Days of Summer

Ahhh  the dog days of summer. My Labor Day was spent working with my husband on some exhausting yard work. Finally after a much needed dip in the pool, we cooled off and I decided to check on a property out in Harveys Lake for an out of town client.

No ride to Harveys Lake is complete without swinging in to the Ranch Wagon. This 50 year old establishment is the result of Allan Robertson who at age <gasp> 16 started this car side service. Rolling down your window for a tray that sits on it some how, and wait for the waitress and waiter to bring your order to the car began for Shavertown in 1955.

It's great that some things don't change with time, and the nostalgia for this type of dining remains for the Luzerne County residents. Even our new arrivals must admit that the closest thing they may have seen this kind of service was on a show called Happy Days.

The only new feature is the Pavilion for those who do not wish to eat in their car. Charlie and I opted for the pavilion, and sat watching the passers by. While eating my 12" dog and sipping on my root beer  I thought  of all the wonderful rides to Harveys Lake that traditionally meant for many families to stop at the Ranch Wagon. With all the new eateries in Shavertown the Ranch Wagon remains a strong favorite for some of the local area residents.

Yup....a good old fashioned eatery. I personally think all of these top those fast food places...if only for the atmostphere.

Sally, It's a great place that kept its old fashioned traditions, and remains the success it was 50 years ago. Beats fast food places by a landslide in my books.

I love those great local flavor places.  Of course, out here in Cali it was about 110 and super-humid on Labor Day, so hold the pavillion.

Joey Whew, I wouldn't leave the house on a day like that! Still I would take a beach and ocean over some of our brutal winters. Thanks for your comment      :)

Diane:  Nothing like those old dives.  We stil have a few throughout the mountains and I think that's one of the main reasons people come.  We have one of the few remaining drive in theatres in the entire country located in Blue Ridge.  Your story took me back to some fond memories with my own family at places like these.  I hope there will always be some that remain and withstand the test of time. You are a wonderful writer and what a sweet constitution you have.
