Is My Listing Haunted? A Halloween Tale.

By
Real Estate Agent with Re/Max Plus

With Halloween quickly approaching, I thought it would be fun to share a story about one of my listings. Earlier this year, my partner Karen and I listed a house in Macedon. The house was originally built as a small cabin around 1850. The current owner purchased it in the 1970s, renovating and expanding it into the spacious ranch it is today. It's truly a unique property. If houses could talk, it would undoubtedly have a lot to say about its 150+ years of existence.

haunted houseWhen we listed the house, it had been sitting vacant for a while, and as a result there was a layer of dust over everything. We convinced our seller that it was worthwhile to have it professionally cleaned before it went on the market. An agent in our office also does cleaning on the side, so we set it up for her to go in and make it sparkle!

According to this agent, she felt "creepy" as soon as she entered the house. She kept feeling like there was someone there with her, but upon looking over her shoulder, she was always alone. She refused to go down into the basement. The thing that really disturbed her, though, was a small electric candle in the window of the original part of the house. She swore that she hadn't turned it on, but upon coming into the room, it was glowing brightly.

I must admit, I'm scepticle about her story. Karen and I have been in that house countless times and haven't seen or experienced anything. The light switches in the house can be slightly confusing, so I think it's more likely she switched the candle on without realizing it. I've never sensed anything paranormal there.

However, I do believe there are things out there we can't explain. Is it possible one of the occupants of the house never left? I doubt it, but I certainly can't say it couldn't happen.

What about you? Do you believe in ghosts? Have you ever seen something in a house you can't explain?

Happy House Hunting, and Happy Halloween!!

Kristen, you put a smile in my face... How creepy!!! I would love to see what you wrote in your listing... Did you advertise it as a haunted house? I believe you will have to disclose to potential buyers that the house is haunted... :O)

What about doing an open house on October 31 at midnight? Or better yet... a sleep over... :O)

I love the Halloween open house idea!!

Many, many years ago, I often felt a "presence" in my apartment - and found out later the complex had been built very near an old Indian burial ground. I am convinced someone else was living there with me.

Susan, I wouldn't doubt it! My mother rented her late aunt's home for a year or so when she was younger. She often said she felt a presence. Once, the aunt's favorite rocking chair started rocking back and forth. There was no heat on, no windows open... no reason the chair should be moving. Things like that make me a believer!

Karen, it looks normal... take a peek! http://www.realtyusa.com/property/property.asp?PRM_MLSNumber=128126&PRM_MlsName=RochesterNY&VAR_AgentCode=rusa559&VAR_OfficeCode=15
