While Google may be the most used search engine by just about the entire planet, you can't forget about others such as Bing. (Microsoft's "new" offering in search engines)
Bing continues to grow its market share. Computerworld.com reported in July that Bing's search engine share had grown from 12.7 the month before (June) from 12.1 percent in May. Google had 62.6 percent of all search traffic in June, but Bing's growth is still...growth.
In addition, the announcement earlier this year that Bing and Yahoo! will merge in an effort to compete with Google will only help Bing grow even more by the time the merger is complete in 2012.
So you really shouldn't/can't ignore Bing. Here are some tips to help you optimize your real estate website for this search engine:
- Go to Bing's Webmaster Center and set up an account.
You submitted your site to Google and Yahoo! didn't you (didn't you!?), so be sure to submit it to Bing.
- Many search experts have said that Bing's search algorithm looks for keywords more than Google's does, so keep that in mind as you create your site's content. Never stuff your content with keywords, of course, but be sure to write engaging, valuable content (informative to your particular target market's needs) with well-researched keywords relevant to your target market's searches.
- Metatags appear to be more important to Bing than to Google. Be sure you place your important keywords within them. Make sure they're descriptive.
Be aware, however, not to focus all of your SEO on your metatags -- be sure to go after getting backlinks.
- All three of the major search engines (Google, Bing and Yahoo!) look at how many backlinks your site has as an indication of how "valuable" your site is. The more backlinks from well-regarded the sites, the more "value" the search engines believe your site has because the well-regarded sites apparently value your site -- because they have linked to you. Your site will rank higher as a result of your backlink "popularity."
