Happy Halloween! by New York Feng Shui consultant

Halloween is the one of the oldest and top most celebrated holidays today. Do you know why we choose to dress up and paint our faces and look scary or why we go trick-or-treating?

How do you view Halloween? Do you feel it is a time to stay in and avoid "evil" spirits? or a time to just have fun! :)

Halloween is on October 31st, which is the last day of the Celtic calendar. It was originally a pagan holiday to honor those who have passed. Halloween is referred to as All Hallows Eve and dates back to over 2000 years ago.

Different cultures from around the world took part in celebrating Halloween.  Looking to the history books you will discover the Egyptians took part in this practice as well. The roots lay in the feast of Samhian, which was annually on October 31st to honor the dead, celebrate the "end to summer", and give thanks to a plentiful year ahead for harvesting.

Many believed that the souls of the dead roamed the streets and villages at night. Not all spirits were thought to be friendly so gifts and treats were left out to keep away "bad" spirits from entering the home.

  • This practice turned into trick-or-treating.

People would paint their faces and dress up to be as hideous as possible so that spirits would not choose to connect with their soul.

  • This practice turned in wearing customs to go trick-or-treating or to a happening Halloween party :)

I remember growing up my mother would always tell me to stay in on All Hollows Eve, she felt uneasy.  Every year she would tell me stories about White witches (those who wish to help heal others) and Black witches (those with not the best intentions in mind) journeying into the streets on that particular evening to do their "work".

There are many versions about the origins and old customs of Halloween. Various cultures view Halloween somewhat differently but, traditional Halloween practices remain the same.

Have a Happy and Safe Halloween Everyone!!

It all makes sense now.  Treats outside to keep bad spirits away, and hideous costumes to make us unappealing.  One son is going out dressed as a box this year (his idea and creation), and the other as a little kid in his pyjamas.  Hmmmm, not hideous in the least!!  But I bet they'll get loads of candy anyway.  BTW, you make an excellent zombie :)

Cool Halloween history. I'm from Detroit, so it is really the day before Halloween that I find scary. At least it isn't as bad as it used to be!

I stayed in this time and did not dress up or hand out candy. Looks like I made it out alive without eggs on my house!
