A/R Stagers are some of the most creative, caring, and community-minded people that you'll ever meet. Many have helped our communities in a variety of ways (sometimes as part of a group effort, and sometimes on our own). There are countless worthwhile charities across North America that need our help, especially this time of year. So let's see what we can do to make a difference!
Active Rain is encouraging all of us to reach out and serve those less fortunate, who may need a little help. We'd like to ask all A/R members (not restricted to home stagers) to offer your time, services, or materials to any local charity or community group, and then blog about what you did and how it helped others during this Holiday Season.
A/R will award 1,000 Bonus Points to anyone writing a post about how they "Staged it Forward." So you WIN in several ways: Your help within your community directly helps others, your blogging about it encourages others on A/R to join in & help their communities, and you'll see a boost of 1,000 Bonus Points here on A/R!
Here are just a few ideas on volunteering your time & talent this Holiday Season (between now & Dec. 31st) ~ please feel free to add your own good ideas in your comments, to encourage everyone else:
Volunteer at a local 'Meals on Wheels' or similar program
Help a local shelter by volunteering to clean, paint, organize, or enhance it -- bring a friend or family member with you and you'll both feel good
Offer to decorate rooms in a community-oriented venue for the holidays
Enhance common areas at a hospice facility, for the residents as well as their visitors
Offer to spruce up classrooms in local schools; ask if they need extra paper, pens, crayons, art supplies, etc. or if they need some rooms painted (if so, ask your local paint or hardware store if they'd donate some paint)
Donate your gently-used items of furniture, clothing, or household goods that you might have sold at a garage sale .... or hold that garage sale, and donate all the proceeds to a local charity -- get your neighbors to join in
Visit a local retirement home or convalescent facility and ask if you can visit residents who don't have family members nearby -- then bring them a few small gifts or offer to help send holiday cards for them
Homeless shelters would appreciate donations of warm blankets, food, & winter coats
Contact any of your local community charities and ask them where their need is greatest -- everyone needs help this time of year
Think of other creative ways you can donate your time, services, or materials .. the options are endless!

This is a great opportunity not only to give but to "get" as well Maureen! Our local RESA Chapter is having a group come speak to us at our next meeting called Dwell with Dignity - it's a not for profit organization that helps others in need live in beautiful surroundings - not just exist in meager ways. We're looking to assist the group this season as a chapter service project.
I have reached out to offer my services to a local shelter already. They are considering it and I hope they accept soon (they are understandably cautious due to not wanting to disclose their safe house location.)
I love your idea of including family members, Maureen. What a valuable gift for everyone involved - the receivers as well as the givers!
Thanks for the list of suggestions. It brings to mind things that can be done whether we were getting AR points or not. Sometimes I think we get so busy that we forget how fortunate we are and how we should help others whenever possible.
Are our posts supposed to be Members Only like the AR Stage It Forward Accountability Group?
I especially like your idea about visiting retirement homes and bringing Christmas gifts to those who do not have family.
Between now and Christmas, I will probably be watching for sales on clothing and toys. I usually make purchases on sale items and donate to a non-profit group who provides gifts for families in need. Throughout the year, I've already purchased a few items and have already donated them, but groups like this make me want to do more :)
Great idea Maureen - leave it to you to inspire all of us to help people less fortunate! I've also found when you give, you get. As an example, the last home I staged I did free of charge (Labor of Love) for a friend's mom whose husband died and she couldn't afford her home. It was very sad for her and she is now going to live with her daughter. While staging the home, the family asked me if I knew a good realtor and I in turn gave the agent I work with the listing. Another agent in the office saw my work and asked me to stage one of his listings. Thanks for reminding us all to give this season!

I love paying it forward and will gladly do something special just for this challenge :) I'll gladly take the 1000 points too, lol. This is one of the best challenges we've had here...doing for others is something we all need to focus on, now, more than ever.

David -- the more the merrier is right! Looking forward to your post next month. (Hey, getting 1,000 Bonus Points is fun too!)
Karen ~ It's great to hear that your RESA chapter is reaching out to help in this way. Please blog about it and let us know how it turned out....thank you!
Lin ~ It's true, when we help others it also gives us such a good feeling. Bringing a family member along makes it fun because you can talk share the experience. Good luck with your local shelter -- I'm sure the residents are going to be so appreciative of your help!
Joyce -- it sounds like you already have some fantastic ideas for helping others in your community -- good for you :-) Please feel free to make your post Public if you like -- or if you'd rather it be Members only, that's your choice.
Kristine ~ I love your story about how you helped stage your friend's mother's home, and because of that connection you also found some staging work. That is great synergy at work!
Elizabeth ~ You are SO right -- we need to focus on others, not worry about ourselves, especially this time of year. I'm so glad you're planning to do the challenge....thank you!
I love to Pay It Forward (already participating in that group) and I love contests...what a great "marriage" of ideas! Thanks too for sharing suggestions.
