The Race to Nowhere

Real Estate Agent with Wende Schoof 01198641

This morning I was perusing the upcoming events for November in Redwood City and came upon this documentary movie screening:

Race to Nowhere, showing Tuesday, Novemeber 2, 7 pm at the Redwood City Veterans Memorial Senior Center TheaterRace to Nowhere movie trailer

Hmmm... sounded interesting, so I looked it up on line  After watching the trailer, I was hooked!  For anyone who has school age kids, or knows someone who has school age kids (that should include just about everybody), this looks like a movie with a strong message for all of us!  Director, Vicki Abeles, a self-proclaimed novice in the film industry, is a San Francisco Bay Area parent who brings to light this critical issue facing most of our children daily, nation-wide - the extreme stress too many of our children are experiencing in their quest for college/future success.

Oh, and back to the Tuesday showing in Redwood City...the proceeds for the movie ($10 ticket) will go to the Gabriel Memorial Fund, intended to help subsidize youth and teens to participate in city-sponsored recreation programs.

I know where I'm going to be this coming Tuesday night!

Great subject for a movie. I think I'll see where I can find it. Thanks!

So, how was it? Kids these days do seem to be under a lot more pressure to perform, and all they want to do is play video games. Maybe that's their escape?

Joetta - it was good.  It's a documentary and wasn't melo-dramatic at all.  It makes some good points - that many kids are under just too much pressure, and it's time for parents to step in and start saying "too much!"  From watching my own kids go through it, I completely agree with you - the video games are an escape from a reality that they're not equipped to handle. And, I think the epidemic of drinking in all colleges is also an escape mechanism. What some of these kids are doing, and the severe lack of sleep that goes with it, is more than almost any adult would be able to handle either.  My daughter was glad she went, too.  If you get a chance to see it, I recommend it heartily.
