The 7 Levels of Communication & Generation of Generousity

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with CENTURY 21 All Star REALTORS

I recently attended a seminar for my local association and the guest speaker was Michael Maher, author of the 7 levels of communication.  My husband and I had been out to dinner in a local restaurant and we observed two young couples and two small children all sitting around the dinner table.  The 2 women were both talking to somebody else on their smart phones, the 2 children each had a game boy in hand, and 1 of the two men was texting at the table.  The other man looked like he was on an island by himself.  It gave us both a sense of how you can be surrounded by people yet so disconnected from each other.

I loved the seminar, I went out today and bought a ton of stamps, (yes snail mail) because I am going to recommit to sending personal hand written notes to my agents, my clients AND my friends and family.  They deserve it.  No more relying on just drip campaigns, and quick text message for occasions that warrant more.  We can use technology to make things simpler and quicker, but nothing replaces the human element.

One last thought and that is to embrace a new generation, the generation of generousity, a kinder, slower, more personal way to reach out and serve each other, especially when it is tempting to use the latest greatest technology for our convenience.  Lets use text messages to transmit simple messages, lets use our voices and communicate and give more out then what we take.  Read this book and see how you can take people from acquaintences to referral relationships, Michael is the #1 REALTOR in Kansas City and I thought is presentation and book is something we could all use!

Great thoughts, and remember it personal notes do get remembered in a society of text messages and e-mails. Also remember to more face to face time the better because things will not get lost or misunderstood.

Wow, that really paints a picture of how disconnected we are.

Colleen, I have had the pleasure or working with a few buyers who did not have email- at first, it scared me to death wondering how we were going to accomplish anything in a timely manner.  Surprisingly, we managed just fine with face to face meetings and phone calls.  I realized that I had a much closer and stronger relationship with these individuals because of it, too.  Your post brings up a lot of good points today!

Three cheers from your friend in Asheville for this advice, " We can use technology to make things simpler and quicker, but nothing replaces the human element. ..."

I think it is a combination of ways you communicate with people.  But all inpersonal communication does not build the kind of relationship that gets referrals.
