 Speechless Sunday-Too close for comfort

Although I am fascinated by trains having one pass directly over my head is just too close for comfort.  This actually happened to me a couple years ago.

I had a land parcel listed in the town of Amenia which is located in the north eastern area of Dutchess County.  The property was located just after that railroad bridge shown in the picture;  and one day I was on my way to meet my client at the at the site when as soon as I was under the bridge the Metro North  Harlem Line train passed overhead.

For most people they would not have given it a second thought but with my active imaginations I came up with lots of what ifs in a matter of a few seconds.  Train passing directly over me is just too close for comfort.

I would've hit the gas, really fast.  I used think about things like this when I lived back in Chicago and had to drive past O'hare - the planes seemed like they were going to land on me!!!

It's pretty freaky to be in a boat and under the railroad bridge when a train crosses it, too! BUT... kinda fun too! :O)

Hi Jennifer,

That's similar to the way I feel when I'm in traffice under an overpass here in SoCal because of our earthquakes. I still remember the photo years ago of a pick-up truck crushed by such a thing. Needless to say the driver did not survive.

Once again, I love your local pictures, so different than the scenery out here in Southern California

Yes, I can see why you'd feel that way based on that picture.

Jennifer I am sure a train going over that bridge was pretty darn loud and scary!

Jennifer - I think of stuff like that all the time.  Especially under overpasses and even more especially when I am stuck under one.  ;-)  Although judging by the narrow space, I doubt a train car could fall through.  Now if it went off to the side or something, that would be a different story.  :-/

For those who are not familiar with our Metro North trains, they are pretty quiet - considering.  On the other hand, NYC subways are really loud.  LOL

Jennifer - I remember driving under an overpass like that when my kids were still young.  When a train went over, my son said, "Mama, we've just been run over by a train."  It sounded like it for certain:-)

Jennifer, that had to be one heck of a loud experience.

That would be something that I would avoid in the future ........ LOL

Jennifer, I think I would be concerned about oncoming traffic as well!  The passage looks like it is wide enough only for one vehicle.

When I first saw this picture, I thought it was a close call with on-coming traffic under the single lane tunnel....that would be too close for comfort for me.  :)

Patrick thank you.

Liz my thought exactly.

Mathew being stuck in traffic can bring out similar thoughts.

Juli  I don't then stepping on the gas would have been a good idea just around the bend is a bridge going over a stream :) also the road is narrow so you have to be careful going under the rail bridge.

Joni That would be scary for me too.

Melanie it was.

Lynda wow what a sad story; no wonder you get those feelings.

Brian thank you.  I love seeing other parts of the country, and here on the network I get many opportunities to do so.

Deb I cringe when I look at the picture.  Beautiful scene except for a combination of bridge and train :)

jennifer, that IS too close for comfort! I had a dog, Wizard, who used to duck when we crossed a bridge - he would not have liked the train going over us at all!

I grew up with one of these n my hometown. It actually had a "tunnel" walk through as well. Now talk about loud...exciting for a kid!

Jennifer,

Wow a 10' clearance is very low. That's essentially the height of a basketball rim. :)

Hi Jennifer... I am with you!  Those bridge supports look awfully wobbly.  Well maybe it's all in my imagination!  :-)
