Walsenburg Colorado

When you drive into Walsenburg Colorado it's like stepping back in time. There is one stop light, a couple of well known restaurants and everybody knows everybody else.

The court house and neighboring Walsenburg Miners Museum stand in the center of town. All records in the court house are kept in file cabinets not online. There is no need to call ahead for an appointment, just don't stop in at lunch hour.

The lime stone buildings are functionally obsolete, but still really serve a purpose for the community. The dates etched into the stone above the door ways are from 1886.

What a great blog. I am such a history buff (as you know) and every time I drive through Walsenberg, I love to look at the beautiful historic buildings. I often imagine life would be quite a bit more simple living in Walsenberg.

Dena - There is something nice about stepping back in time, I too love old buildings .  I remember when I first moved to the Hudson Valley we moved to a one light town and the pace of life was much slower.  Yes you actually had time to enjoy the things around you.

... and those old buildings will be there long after a lot of the modern buildings have crumbled to the ground.

Dena, I don't think I've ever exited I-25 there. Looks like I should. Thanks for sharing your local lore.

Dena, not that I would want to turn back the clock, because I like the technological advances that we have made, but it is nice to save at a little bit of the past, with communities such as this.

We talk about our historic buildings - I'm originally from Newport, RI, which had buildings from the 1600s - yet we go to Europe, and their buildings and some of the homes go back for centuries!

The photos remind me of the town my son lives in; Ottawa, Kansas.  The county seat is there, so there is a big county building.  They were much more imposing then than they are now!
