~ Skeletons were found in Cheesman Park in Denver, Colorado. ~

Yes, four skeletons were unearthed Monday as workers were digging a new irrigation system in Cheesman Park located just southeast of downtown Denver.

 skeletons

The area where Cheesman Park is located in Denver used to be Prospect Hill Cemetery.  The first person buried there was hanged for killing his brother-in-law back in 1859.  The cemetery was known to have many criminals and paupers laid to rest there.  But by the 1890's, the city moved the bodies (at a cost of $2 per body) to turn the land into a city park.  The company that was hired to move the bodies was unscrupulous.  Many of the graves ere robbed and never removed.  Trees were planted in many of the grave holes.  By 1907, this area was had been transformed into a beautiful park.  To read about the full history of the cemetery, you can click here.  To some, the park is haunted by those that were never properly moved.  To read about theGhosts of Cheesman Park, this article will give you some accounts of the "sightings".

How interesting!  I hope if they find a name for this dude...you will give us an update.

When I use to live in Luling, Texas, as a child we would always find interesting artifacts left behind by Indians.  Stuff like arrow heads and these little stone things they started fires with....they have a  name but for the life of me I can't remember it.

Very interesting story and I would guess whoever is in the picture above never thought that they would make the front page again.

It matters to us as much as it matters to you.

Gawd, that is just plain creepy.  Wasn't there a movie where they built a subdivision over an old graveyard?

Interesting post Dawn. As we have only been in the Denver area for about 18 months it is always interesting to me to learn about the history of the area. This is really good stuff as I am certain most people have no idea they are running around over an old grave yard. Thanks for sharing.

Love the ghost stories and mining era history of Denver! Good thing there's a happy park on top and not a real estate office....:-)

Chuck ~ when I first moved out here backc in '91, I took a haunted house bus tour offered through Colorado Free University.  I'm not sure if it's still around though.  The tour was so interesting!

Lisa ~ now that would be interesting!  Having a haunted real estate office!
