I know I need to lead generate... Right after I do this one thing... Oh and that too!
Chris had identified one of the biggest culprits to procrastination: Fear. Nothing stops us from making progress towards a go goal faster than fear can. If you can't conquer your fear, perhaps a new goal is in order.
You know what I am talking about... That one or two or three things that are just way to important to do later.
Like: Checking your email, buying a pretend goat for a pretend farm, checking the news, adding a link to your website, looking at the homes that are on tour this week, uploading pictures from last weekend onto Facebook, seeing how many listings that your competition has, watching Oprah, playing Xbox or Playstation, surfing the web, working on your fliers for your open house when it is only Monday, standing by the water cooler chatting away, studying more about what you are trying to actually do... And the list can go on and on and on!
Why oh why do we seem to place a priority on everything but the one thing that we know we should be doing...
We know we need to lead generate, to pay the bills!
Procrastination is often described as the deferment of actions to a later time...
Procrastination can also be a way to cope with the anxiety that can be associated with the actual action that you are trying to avoid...
Can it be that you are worrying about some future misfortune that can occur if you actually do the item that you are putting off?
Can it be that you are stressing over the probability that someone could actually saying yes?
A lot of our fear comes from the unknown... Henry Ford said that you never really know if you can do something until you try. Try it, you might like it.
I say, that something must be uncomfortable first before it becomes comfortable... Then and only then does growth occur in yourself. I have never known a leader/producer that didn't have points in their careers where they were uncomfortable first, then became a master... But that my friends, will me a future post!
So if it is a fear, find ways to overcome those fears. Get with a support group of peers to power through it together. Study enough scrips to allow you to feel comfortable with challenges and objections. Practice the dialogs with your peers to become a master. Learn and accept that it is okay to fail, and mess up... Use it as a growing experience!
What is it that is making you procrastinate? And what are steps that you have taken to overcome it? Please share!
