Blogging tip - Free Images

By
Real Estate Agent with One Percent Realty Vancouver Island

If anyone has come across Lenn Harley's posts on copyright infringement which can be found here, the urge to right click and grab an image for your blog from "somewhere out there" might not be so very sharp.  And if it is then you need to go back and read again!

But we all like images in our blogs.  I came across a pretty good FREE resource today so I thought I would share:

www.sxc.hu is a photo site with almost 400,000 photos available for download and use.  I'll add a disclaimer here that that is what I understand and I could be wrong so check the licence agreement yourself, your're responsible for everything you do, look both ways when you cross the street and don't drink the drano.

I grabbed these images today.

My son just told me about that site last week, so I went to take a look. Didn't use any of their images yet because I was in a hurry and didn't want to take the time to set up an account, etc. But I sure intend to go back!

I'm glad to know about sites to get free images - there are some on IstockPhoto for only a couple of dollars, but it takes forever to find them, and that couple of dollars can really add up if you blog every day.

To get away from that cost, a month or so ago I purchased software for that purpose and only succeeding in getting a section on my hard drive that refuses to defrag. I couldn't get the software to work, so uninstalled it, but the hard drive is still messed up.

Thanks for sharing - I hit suggest because I think it would be good to spread the word!

Thanks Catherine.

Thanks Elite guy.

Hi Marte - Ugh, nightmare.  I also use shutterstock for website images, though I have started looking at Istock, I think they are comparable.

Call for houses for rent or commercial space!

There were some info on the site to make note of, under agreement terms:

  • You also agree to take the time to comment on and rate the Image you downloaded and do your best to show the work you created with the Image to the photographer. This is a simple thing and means a lot to many of our contributors who simply would like to know how their work is used.

  • All images and their descriptions and presentation in general ("Images") on the Website are the property of either SXC and/or its members and are protected by international copyright laws. Use of these Images without license is prohibited

What really sounds good is:

The images on SXC can be used for all sorts of purposes without any problems. You can use them to create website designs, illustrate your blog, spice up your multimedia presentations, set them as wallpapers on your computer, include them in broadcast film and video; you can also use them in books, magazines, brochures, flyers, CD/DVD covers; you can decorate your home, office, restaurant etc. with them and so on.

Since it's impossible to list all the permitted uses, I'll try to explain what's allowed from a different approach. The images you can download from SXC for free are shared by generous individuals who would like to help you out so you can make something really nice with them. Using the pictures in a design, illustrating an article, making a book cover is OK, but - and here comes the important part:

You MUST NOT sell or distribute the images in any way. You MUST NOT create printed reproductions, put them on Cafepress-like "print on demand items" or do any other similar activity that does not require any effort from your part. In other words, you are not allowed to use the images for projects where the object of sale would be the images themselves. For these types of projects you must get written permission from the artists, because if you plan to distribute their work without their consent, you're going to get yourself in big trouble.

Thanks, David !!
