Creative Home Expressions Gives You the Inside Scoop on
Fall 2007's Decorating Trends
From Europe, and our own trend-setting US cities, come some new looks, colors, and some surprising features in home décor. From paint colors, to fabrics, to home accessories, it's all about color, texture and finish this fall.
According to Long Island, NY-based certified interior decorator, Kathy Passarette of Creative Home Expressions, following are some of the hottest trends in decorating this fall.
•v All the rage in Europe right now, primary colors convey strength, energy and power. These colors include oranges, reds, blues, greens, yellows and black. Yellows can be found in many different shades. Reds are paired with charcoal gray. Black and white is used as a neutral with punches of green and blue as accent colors in pillows and accessories.
•v To create a soothing and calming influence, choose one of seven key neutral colors, which include dusty lavender, light gray, soft yellow, light champagne, blush, ivory and soft blue. These colors are being used in monochromatic color schemes; repeated in graphic shapes and textures. Taupe is being used as an accent with these colors.
•v Warm colors being used for fall include natural terracotta, celadon green, varying shades of yellow, red and eggplant purple. Black and white is being combined with these colors as well as adding punch to a room with these brilliant shades.
•v The cool shades of blue and green are ever popular and constantly evolving. The combination of blue and brown is still popular, and has become a staple in interior decorating. You can adjust the shades slightly for a more updated and personal look. Sharp crisp blues, periwinkle, navy and teal abound. Cobalt is back. These colors work well with silver as accents for a modern twist in drapery hardware and home accessories. Variations of wood tones and natural fibers portray All-American décor. Popular this fall will be deep gray with teal blue; and gray and taupe with a touch of blue.
•v Feminine touches are very much in vogue with glossy finishes, curved mantels, flowers, over-sized florals in wallpaper and fabric, crystals and metallics in chandeliers and decorative window treatment hardware. Formal china place settings as more people entertain at home. Shine is in for casual and formal décor. Gold is back, in small doses, in gilded mirrors, knobs, light switch plates or window hardware.
•v Menswear makes its way into interior decorating with textures and fabrics including gray flannel, houndstooth and gray tweed patterns and textures showing up in flooring and fabrics.
•v And finally, there is a nod to going green seen in bamboo and natural woven shades. Bamboo is a naturally renewable plant and does not need pesticides or fertilizers. Honeycomb shades cut the cost of heating and air conditioning bills. Continuing in popularity are sisal rugs, with interesting fabric bindings along the edge to give them added interest with color and pattern.
