WARNING – Realtors Don’t Waste YOUR Time Blogging on ActiveRain

by Leander McClain, Realtor

You have read the warning. Now let me explain why Realtors should not waste their time blogging on ActiveRain.

When I started in real estate I was taught the following lessons:

1. You must continually prospect for new business.

2. It may take a couple of years before you see results

3. You must continually prospect for new business

One thing I have learned about Realtors is that we want instant gratification. And who can blame us. We spend lots of money to get set up in the real estate business. Many of us have continuing monthly expenses. Business cards, association dues, web site & MLS fees, lockboxes, signs, gas, clothes, the list goes on.

But Leander…..what about the warning about blogging on Active Rain?

Patience Grasshopper.

Patience. That is the name of the game here. Readers of my blog know that I advocate no or low cost prospecting for Realtors. You can spend lots of money prospecting, but there really is no need. There is no single activity that will bring you all of your business.

However, blogging on ActiveRain will bring business to your doorstep!

What you do with it after that will determine whether or not you succeed in Real Estate. That’s a post for another day. April 22, 2008 I wrote my first blog post on ActiveRain. It was a post about a Free Military Address Changer. I didn’t really know why I was blogging or how to do it. But I blogged & I read other people's blogs & I read blogs about how to blog. A week later, I posted something else. I commented on other commented on blogs. I kept on blogging. I blogged for months & months & months.

Then a funny thing happened ~ my phone rang as a result of a blog post.

They were calling me to buy a house right???? WRONG!!!! The caller wanted to know when the Burlington Bristol Bridge was going to be closed (yes that was one of my blog posts). I can’t tell you how many call I received about the bridge closing. I told you that blogging would bring business to your door. I asked every single person if they or someone they knew was looking to buy or sell a home.

Eventually people started to call me about real estate. Blogging on ActiveRain is a No cost way of prospecting. Your blog posts will let people know that you are in the Real Estate business. I cannot tell you how many deals I have closed because of my ActiveRain blog. My phone continues to ring.

My advice to Realtors……Blog on ActiveRain. If you stick with it long enough, it will pay off.

Have another great day

The timeline is different, as the learning curve and blogging skills/topics vary, but I don't know any persistent blogger that hasn't gotten business as a result of blogging on Active Rain.

Time and an investment in AR will pay off.... But you do get some strange calls!  I have gotten calls asking where people can take their kids crabbing, how to register  for a town event... and yup even have done a loan or two!

it is all about setting yourself up as the go-to person in your market!

I would probably be blogging anyway, even if I wasn't a real estate agent, so AR has been a real blessing to me. I enjoy the time I spend on i, and I have recieved a couple of phone calls about something I blogged.

Leander

You shouldn't blog on ActiveRain unless you want business.

Good luck and success.

The less other agents blog the better for you.  Funny thing is, you can tell them how wonderful blogging is and they still won't do it and you come across and the agent who is just trying to share knowledge.  I try to share the good news about blogging so that I have done my part and not keeping it a secret.  The really good part is that the don't listen anyway.

BTW, welcome back.

Yes, it's not about how fast or cool you, it's about consistency and value.

Leander - great advice!  I got started on AR just over a year ago, "dropped out" due to some family issues, and am now back at it.  It's posts such as yours that remind me why I do this!

Thanks Leander, I have only be blogging for a short while but it is nice to get thoughts on paper and see the responses.  I will be happy to have a success story as well.

Yes Leander, we have decided this year to allocate more resources (mostly our time) to Active Rain and I have to admit that AR is one of our best marketing REO.
