Hi guys, this will be a super short post compared to the monster tech tutorials I usually write but since this news is as fresh as it gets, I wanted to use it as an example of the kind of publicity you don't want even though I see this kind of thing all over the web and here on ActiveRain.

Over an over again we hear that it's not OK to use images without permission. We also read stories about people copying/pasting content without permission.

marti garaughty, The Art of Marketing YOU

Well today, a fairly obscure little magazine Cooks Source is getting more publicity than they bargained for from some of the biggest names on the net when they reprinted a 2005 article by Monica Gaudio without her permission. Take a look...

from Wired... Cooks Source Copyright Infringement Becomes an Internet Meme

from Gawker... Cooks Source Magazine Oddly Not Media-Savvy

from Boing Boing... Today's web justice driveby: Cooks Source Magazine

from Storify... http://storify.com/kegill/cooks-source-magazine-ignites-copyright-firestorm

If that doesn't clearly make the point about how bad things can get when someone's content is used without permission, then nothing will. I've seen this story today all over Twitter, Facebook and in my RSS reader.

I often see images being used here on ActiveRain that shouldn't be but I'm not the blog police, I'm not your mommy or your daddy so I don't stick my nose into other people's business but... if you use images or content without the author's express permission, it can and probably will come back to haunt you in some way. End of story!

A few weeks ago a wrote a blog post titled Minimalism, It's Not Just Fpr Breakfast Anymore  Do you think it was an accident that near the bottom of my post I mentioned...

"Note: I'd like to thank Seth and John for giving me permission to use screenshots of their blogs and websites. Leo has uncopyrighted his blogs so I know he won't mind me sharing this with you."

Yes I asked each and every one of them before I wrote my post. If you want to quote someone's text or use their images, just ask! Most people will be happy that you're sharing their stuff!

I have to admit part of the reason I post few photos is because I am worried about this. I have just started to take more of my own photos so I can freshen up my blog and not get in trouble.

marti, after reading the editor's flippant remarks, (my bad!) and the underhanded and offensive apology (ya right) I just don't care for these folks presence. I believe Monica handled it with grace and moxy. Thanks for bringing this to light.

I have a really hard time trying to understand what the big whoop is about giving credit. Are you so insecure that you cannot give some one credit fo an idea or a photo.? The fact that it is in your blog with your contrrent should make it yours in a way . But not to give credit is so bad. i agree with you on this 100 percent

If you ever see that I did something wrong, call me on it. I don't think I do...I use my own photos in my posts or else I buy pictures from istock to insert for fun. I would never want to steal someone's stuff.

There is lots of talk about infringement on AR. I just figure that some people just didn't listen in high school. We talked a lot about it there--remember those research papers that kids used to copy out of the encyclopedia?

I use my own pics and I pay for those that aren't mine.  My kids think I'm crazy to pay for things that I can lift from the internet.  I guess, they need a lesson in copyright law.  Like Judith, some people wrongly think that if it's on the internet, it's public domain....NOT.

Mike... the only thing people really have to know is don't use anything that isn't yours unless you have the owner's permission or you bought it and have a commercial use license.

Chuck... taking your own pics is always a safe way to go.

Deb... tell me about it, what an attitude. ;-)

Charlie... bad indeed and just plain stupid how they responded to the complaint.

Shar... if you're purchasing photos with a commercial use license you have nothing to worry about.

Melissa... yep, I see stuff all the time here on AR including photos, cartoons and videos that obviously don't belong to the blogger posting them but again... I'm not the blog police and I don't want to be. If people still don't get this they might be the next BIG story.

Tammie... you're right, other people's content on the net is not public domain no matter what anyone thinks or incorrectly assumes.

It should surprise me when this happens but not anymore.  I wonder how many of the "bad MLS" photo bloggers realize they are violating copyright and it will take only one really angry agent or seller for them to spend big $$$$ in fines.

'Can't believe the editor of a magazine doesn't have a little more knowledge about copyright law.  Gosh, I hope she doesn't have anything of Lenn's in her little magazine!   Now, THAT could be an expensive mistake.

There's no reason why these people use someone's material.  Not dumb, but just plain stupid.

Steve... hi and thx, have a great weekend!

Erica... you're right, it never ends.

Cindy... unfortunately some people only learn this lesson the hard way.

Margaret... re Lenn, no kidding!

Kay... extremely stupid.

Phil... photos are great, they break up "walls of words" and often help to make a point. Just use your own and you'll be fine.

It is best to take your own photos or buy them from istock photo or somewhere else.. I never take chances.  It is not worth the negative publicity.  Ouch!

Hi Marti,  I'm so far in my reading but had to start with you!  First of all congrats on the 9 Featured Posts....  well deserved.  Thanks for posting this.  A really good reminder for all of us.  I haven't bought images yet - like to point and click or make a logo or something cheesy up in powerpoint. I can honestly say that this is one of the best lessons learned ~ from day one.  Be original...

make it a great day my friend!

Hi Marti -- I will be forever amazed at the audacity of people.  Life can really be simple: don't steal, don't plagarize, things we learned in kindergarten.  Live life this way, and you don't have to worry about what you do, who you said what to whom, etc.  Human behavior is such a sad commentary at times, and for what?  The arrogance of the publishers reply to the author made my blood boil it was so condescending.

Chris... very well said, the arrogance is what turned this into such a BIG deal. You'd think they would know better!
