Church Built in 1919 - Turned around by a Hurricane - in New Port Richey FL

This charming building in the heart of downtown New Port Richey FL has quite a history. It is the original parish for Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church. When the building was dedicated in March, 1919, it was located in a different area, and faced south.

In 1921, a  strong hurricane hit the area directly and the church was heavily damaged, lifted up and brought back down to face west. Father Felix Unger, who was praying at the time, was unharmed (proving, once again, prayer does work). He let the church stay facing west because he said, "If that's the way God wants it, we'll just have to leave it that way."

A new church home replaced this one in a different location in 1966 and this building was moved by the City of New Port Richey to it's present location in 2001. Renovation was finished in 2005.

What a neat story about the Church.  I agree with Father Unger, that must have been the way our Father wanted the building to face.

Toni, Isn't that amazing that the church could be picked up and turned around.  Our slabs pretty much stop that from happening now.  However if God wanted to turn a building around I expect he could get past that slab issue.

Toni - What a fascinating history that church has!  It is amazing to understand the building could be entirely picked up and turned around like that!

I agree, Myrl. I have passed that building 100's of times without knowing that. I finally stopped and read the plaque and was amazed.
