Good for Your Teeth...Deadly for Your Dog!

Along with chocolate and grapes, thanks to Holly Weatherwax, I just learned about something else that is deadly to dogs . . . gum or candy containing Xylitol, an artificial sweetner found in sugarless gum and candies as well as chewable vitamins.

This week one of my good friends spent the better part of the week monitoring the life of her dog , Pete, as he recovered from ingesting a pack of gum with Xylitol.  Xylitol , an artificial sweetener found in many types of sugarless gum,  is toxic to dogs.

Their dog, Pete, found the pack of gum in the pocket of a pair of jeans, ate through the denim to get to the gum and then proceeded to eat the entire twelve pack.

Luckily my friend has a close friend who is a vet. She dashed off a Text Message asking if he would be okay and was told to take him immediately to the local critical care center. Once there, they made him vomit and then kept him for two days while they monitored his glucose levels, hydrated intravenously, and checked him for liver damage.

He is home, resting comfortably
, but my friend is determined to get the word out about this chemical and the danger it poses to our furry friends.

Keep all GUM out of reach of your dogs.  I checked Snopes.com  (my favorite go-to place to confirm or discount Urban Legends) and they fully concur with the dangers of  Xylitol.

Remember that this ingredient is also found in candy and sometimes sugar-free baked goods. Make sure that you do not inadvertently give it to your pet and that all products containing it are kept out of their reach.

We are all happy that the crisis with little Petey had a happy outcome, but do not wish this turn of events on anyone else.

Keep your dogs safe; keep the gum and candy out of reach!

Feel free to re-blog this...it is important to spread the word.

Joyce, thanks for the heads up.  OUr dog has so far survived everything he's eaten - chocolate, grapes, anything with sugar, butter, mayo or sour cream.  Most recently, he raided one of our kids' Halloween candy bags, and fortunately, didn't get any artificial sugar products.

Wende, maybe your dog has an iron stomach!  Sounds like he is from the old school where dogs ate anything and everything!

Jocelyn, Basically our two dogs are outdoor dogs and we bring them in at night and they sleep in their kennels.  My husband accidentally left our back door cracked Saturday while we went to breakfast with neighbors.  One of the dogs took advantage of the cracked door and got into the bag of doggie treats on top of one of the kennels.  She thought she was in doggie Heaven!  Luckily she only ate half the bag but we could tell she was stuffed!

very good to know this information. I have 3 dogs and lots of clients with pets as well. We talk often about pet safety and health issues so this is one more good item to share! Longevity of pets is sometimes really in our own hands, my own pets prove it, I have a 24 year old cat, a 15 year old flat coat retriever, a pair of 11 year old Jack Russell Terriers and then 3 more younger cats.

Wow - I never heard of a 24-year old cat!  You obviously take VERY good care of your pets.  That's awesome.
