Do You Mean It When You Say, "Realtor for Life"?

By

I hear so many REALTORS® use the slogan, “Your REALTOR® for Life”.  Do they mean it when they say it?  I don’t use the slogan, but that is my hope and my intention when I sell a home.  I want to become an important part of my clients’ lives.  Someone they think of right off the bat when homes or real estate is the subject.

I have only been selling homes about eleven years, but some of my clients are on their third house.  I helped the Smiths buy that three bedroom starterFirst Child home.  Four years later when they were expecting their first child, I helped them sell that starter home and buy something a little larger.  A few years later, with baby number two already here, they needed four bedrooms and a finished basement.  Now with family in place, they are looking for a small vacation cabin, maybe a place in Brown County, Indiana where the leaves turn beautiful golds and oranges in the fall.  A place to take the family on weekends.  Technically, that makes house number four.

I am now selling to some of the grown children of families I have served in the past.  How can this be in such a short time span?  The children I once helped choose which bedroom would be theirs are now coming to me for help with their starter home!

Three generationsIt doesn’t stop at two generations.  Grandparents are heading this way to be closer to children and grandchildren.  I am helping them buy what we all know will be their final resting place. Three generations of the same family.  Amazing…….

I had not given this much thought until thinking about writing this post.  What an honor and a privilege to play such an important role in the lives of those I have served.

I am sure it is happening to many of you reading this.  Have you ever thought about your legacy? Some of you have been selling for 40+ years.  One can only imagine what kind of history you have established with your clients.

Well, this is a country built on catchy BS slogans. Just look at the people we elect to govern us.

As for that slogan - I don't use it. There are some clients that never hear from me again, ever. I don't want their business. Once was more than enough, thank you. Something about real estate brings out the best and worst in people.

Pat, a "wannabe" and someone actually doing it are two different things. Agents who are doing it don't have to advertise it - like you. Good Post!

The unfortunate reality is that most "Professional, For Life Realtors" sell a home and never talk to the buyer again.  Good for you in keeping touch with your clients.  It certainly pays off, doesn't it?

Awesome post...I really think that a referral for a client's family member or friend is the ultimate compliment!   I have always stayed in touch with my clients through mailings...now I call them!   What fun we have had and I love the referrals!!!

Pat, this is just beautiful!  Thank you for a wonderful post on a topic so close to my heart.  I've written and done video pieces covering this sort of thing, as in how "Your Realtor for Life" and (my favorite) "Dream Team" have been used over and over to the point where they're just slogans that illicit little more than apathy from consumers.  Because actions speak louder than words.

"I don't use the slogan, but that is my hope and my intention when I sell a home."  That speaks volumes:)

Although it is many of out intents to be a client's Realtor for life the NAR slogan just comes off as desperate to me.  Your post is great and full of personal experience.  That is what NAR should be concentrating on.

Ouch...when read i Pat's post this morning I felt like I was slapped.

Needless to say, my real estate partner, Jami and I use the slogan:  Your Jacksonville Realtors for Life" and while the obvious is implied -- we want to be our clients' Realtors for life -- there is another side of this as well.  And, perhaps we should offer a bit more of an explanation when using our "motto."  For us, it is not just about the real estate transaction, but we want our clients to know we are here for them to help them find referral's and resources for their daily lives.  Now, I recognize that also may be implied... regardless, our clients appreciate our help and willingness to go beyond the closing.

For now, we will proudly continue being our clients' "Jacksonville Realtors for Life"...because as Fernando stated, "... a slogan does not make the agent" and we know this.  We are confident our integrity, honesty, intelligence and outgoing personalities are what makes us great Realtors!!!  - Erica J.

Alex--You are right.  If you do the right thing for the right reasons, your clients will love and appreciate you.  They will not look elsewhere when it comes to real estate!

Cindy--I like to feel good about the home I sell my clients and I always give some thought to what it will be like to sell this home one day in the future.

Marc--We all love referrals and honestly, the compliment and vote of confidence may be more important than the commission!

Barbara--Your clients trust that anything you are associated with will be exceptional and feel comfortable working with your team members.

Fernando--I have never heard it put quite like that--Buffini has probably said something like it.  Very simple plan that works like a charm!

a lot of agents do use it, and because it does sound good to say, but the proof is in the pudding

Gregory--I have only had a few people I chose not to stay in touch with after closing.  I watched with interest and sympathy as their new realtor helped them sell the house I helped them buy.

Michael--People can tell when the caring is genuine.

James--I guess I am nosey/curious because I usually look to see who the last realtor was.  It is never one of the more successful agents ---never one who stays in touch!

Carla--What a unique and accurate way of putting it!

Patricia--Losing a client would be like losing a friend!

Deborah--I have not done a good job of calling.  Was thinking about making this one of my New Year's resolutions!

To elaborate on my partner, Erica Jolles, comments in regards to using "Realtor for Life", I want to elaborate on what it means to me and how we use it.  I can certainly share in my partner's sentiments that she felt "slapped".  Almost 6 years ago, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer.  At that time, I wanted to do whatever I could to get healthy and educate others about being healthy.  I briefly contemplated getting out of the business and going into some sort of health care work.  Then I decidied I could combine my real estate business and share these tips with our clients.  At one point, we passed out keychains with the highest use of pesticides in fruits and vegetables so people could have it on them at the grocery store.  Now, I chair the wellness committe at my daughters's school and we offer health tips on our publicity pieces instead of marketing pieces about us.  We ongoingly share tips with our clients in our e-newsletters about the worst food culprits, top organic foods, green tips and much more.  We also help people make a LIFE when they relocate to town introducing them to friends and letting them know about different things that will make their lives richer and help them get established.  We too, have worked with multiple family members and have been invited to baby namings and weddings.

To me "Realtors for Life" is about LIFE.  Living a healthy life socially and physically.  If we can also be the Realtors they'll want to use again and again, even better!!

Mark--I didn't really expect so many comments on this.  It seems most agents agree that this phrase is overused.  However, if it is working for some out there, go for it!  I am sure those agents are the ones doing a good job and what it takes to keep clients around forever!

Simon--I did not even realize it was an NAR slogan!

Erica--  You and your partner are obviously not slackers using this phrase in a meaningless way.  You give the phrase new meaning and validity.  I am sorry you felt slapped--I did not say anything negative if you re-read my post.  I only asked a question.  There have been negative comments and I understand those.  I have personally experienced some of the poor business practices of colleagues using this slogan.  Don't say it if you don't mean it.  You and your partner obviously mean what you say and show it!  Thanks for your comment shedding a different light on this subject!

Ellen--I do really bond with my clients and there isn't anything I wouldn't do for them.

Erica R.--You should be very proud!!  You must be doing all the right things!!

Dan--Absolutely right!  If you don't mean it, don't say it!!

Jami--Again---I am sorry if you felt slapped. I did not say anything negative in my post, but merely asked a question.  I LOVE what you and your partner do with this phrase.   I LOVE what you and your partner do with your business. If you haven't already, you should write a post--maybe with a link to mine so that everyone can read the positive and negative sides of using the phrase. Take this as an opportunity to write a quality post and maybe get featured!  Let me know when it is posted and I will personally suggest it!!

Erica---Glad you like the idea!  This will help both of us!  In your blog, I assume you will say something like:  'In a recent post, Pat Haddad asks the question, 'Do You Mean It When You Say REALTOR for Life?'    You would go to my blog post and copy what is up in your browser.  Then go to your post which should still be in editable format.  High light the part you want to be the link---such as the title of my post.  Once it is high lighted, you will notice that the chain links up in your tool bar are now highlighted/active.  Click on the unbroken chain, when the window pops up, paste what you copied from your browser into the 'Link URL' box.  Then type the 'Do You mean It When You Say REALTOR for Life?' into the title.  When you close out of that box, it should show as an active link in your blog.  Let me know if you have any trouble.  This is a very important thing to know for your blogging here on Active Rain.  You will use this a lot.
