Typhoon Fitow Approaches Tokyo; Flights Are Canceled (Update5)

Well, tonight is my last night in Japan and, as I write this, Typhoon Fitow is bearing down upon us with winds of up to 123 mph.  I am sitting in an apartment on the 18th floor and there are windows all around me.  The view of the city is spectacular from this vantage point, and I can hear the wind whipping past.  Since this building was constructed in 2004, I have been assured that it is Earthquake proof and engineered so that it will sway if threatened by high winds, but I have a feeling that it's going to be an interesting night!

Here is a photo that I just took from the balcony (quickly, I might add, so that I wouldn't blow away!):

Here's hoping my flight tomorrow doesn't get cancelled!  See you all soon!

Hi Val - hope you got home safely. Typhoons can be a bit scary - especially in a high rise building. I lived in Hong Kong for 6 years so I have lived through a few. It all adds to the far east experience:)

Because I live in Florida and have survived several large Hurricanes over the past few years, I understand!  The 140mph winds of Hurricane Charlie were daunting to say the least!  I hope your flight was allowed to leave safely.....I wonder what it would feel like in a high-rise.  Regards-Kathleen G.

Stephanie...my flight is actually due to leave at 4:30 pm today (Friday), which is around 3:30 am EST.  The really cool thing is that I get home at 4:30 pm on Friday, so I get to live through the day twice!  It's still really windy out there (6:48 am Friday) and I can see sheets of rain blowing across the city from where I am sitting on the 18th floor (I'm really going to miss this view!).

Yvonne....You're too funny!  I'm a-comin'!  Will be back to the States by late Friday afternoon (as long as my plane is able to fly out of here...I'm thinking that it's going to be a shakey 'take-off'!

Kathleen.....I don't know how Floridians can deal with all of those Hurricanes!  Two of my daughters lived there briefly and I was a wreck every time that I heard that a hurricane was heading their way (and there were many that year)!

Val, what an experience you have had in Japan!  I'm a little afraid of heights so I wouldn't have gone out on that balcony - ever!  Thinking of you out there taking a picture in 123 mph winds gives me the heebie jeebies.  Don't do it again.  Your flight better be fine - we need you on AR.  Betty

Val I would have been afraid to go out on that balcony in that wind. Hope your flight is fine. It is scary when you witness the wrath of mother nature isn't it? Thankfully this was at the end of your trip and not the beginning.

Hi Val,

What a great experience for you! I lived in Guam for 2 years and we had many Typhoons. They are kind of scary, but if you prepare and stay inside you'll be fine! Have a safe flight home.
