Daylight Savings time versus Standard Time!!! To change or not to change, that is the question??? OK, there is much ado about this time change. I, for one, do not like it getting dark before 5pm in the evening. I suffer from the blues pretty quickly in the winter months if I do not keep busy. This is because of the darkness, (I am told). I truly do not understand why we keep falling back in the fall. I honestly believe we should keep the Daylight Savings Time enabled all year long.
According to http://www.webexhibits.org/daylightsaving/e.html Daylight Savings time was formally adopted in 1918 here in the US. It was an act to preserve daylight and save fuel. Keeping daylight longer kept down the use of energy. Ok, so why not keep the daylight longer during the fall and winter? This is my question. Having my son going to high school in the dark is probably the only reason I can see to keep this tradition. Personally, I think the high schools send the teenagers to school WAY TOO EARLY!! There have been studies stating that they need more sleep. Oh well, so much for that.
During World War II (in 1942) President Franklin Roosevelt signed into law, year round Daylight Savings time. He called it "War Time". After 1945 there was no regulations regarding Daylight Savings Time, so things got confusing. In 1974 President Nixon signed into law the Emergency Daylight Saving Time Energy Act of 1973. This is where the clocks were set forward in the spring and set back in the fall. This is where the mistake was made. I kind of wish we kept the War Time. I like it that way.
