For those of you who are lovers of all things New York, Manhattan, design and history, the Gramercy Park Hotel is right up there with famous landmarks.
If the subject interests you, there is a wonderful documentary I highly recommend watching. I missed it when it first came out. It originally premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2008 and you can catch it running on the Sundance Channel.
The Gramercy Park Hotel by filmmaker Douglas Keeve is an interesting, funny and sad look at the history of this hotel. Originally built in 1924 - 1925, the hotel became know for its bohemian atmosphere attracting a rich and interesting clientele. Babe Ruth was a regular during the depression. During the 70s and 80s it was the hot spot for rock stars and musicians of all kinds mixed in with artists, writers and full time residents. It was a hangout for the early SNL crew.
The Hotel was purchased by Herbert Weissberg in 1958 and the tragic story of this family who owned the hotel is covered throughout the documentary. The family eventually lost ownership of the property.
In 2003, hotelier and night club entrepreneur Ian Schrager (creator of Studio54) purchased the hotel and embarked on a collaborative renovation with artist Julian Schnabel. The documentary speaks with residents in the hotel and around the neighborhood during this process.
The interiors are stunning and the personal stories sad, funny and interesting. Check it out sometime!
