Child and Babysitting Safety

By
Real Estate Agent with SHAHAR Management

Are you a babysitter or looking to get a job as a babysitter?  Parents, does your babysitter know what to do in case of emergency?  Do they know basic first aid and CPR?  If not maybe they should attend the CABS (Child and Babysitting Safety) course.

These classes combine lectures, videos and hands on practice.  Each student receives  a C.A.B.S. book and certification card to show parents.  Book and card are included in registration fee.

This program is geared toward adolescents 11 and older and NOT intended for daycare workers.  This program provides fundamental information for home childcare babysitters.  Some of the topics covered are:

  • Sitter safety
  • Starting your business
  • Before the parents leave
  • Hand washing
  • Meal preparation
  • Pets
  • Hazards
  • Bedtime
  • Injury prevention
  • CPR

Class size is limited.  Please call 917-374-4919 for dates and locations to reserve your seat or email absolutecpr@hotmail.com.

This type of class is very popular here, too, where the Red Cross teams up with local Parks & Rec departments and offers this training. My daughters took part a generation ago; my 17-year old granddaughter has, too. Whether you babysit or not, the basic safety information provided is a great benefit.

Debra, it's great you are spreading the word to new babysitters about the available courses.  All parents should be aware of these courses and encourage their kids to take them.

Debra, when my daughter was much younger she took one of these classes conducted by the park district...they really are helpful...builds confidence and the parents feel a little more comfortable about it.

Ocassionally I baby sit for my nephews and nieces...I just tie the little rug rats to a chair or something and get a little shut eye...

Debra ~ my neighbor loves to babysit.  She actually took a course and was certified as a babysitter.  When I babysat (way back when) we didn't have courses like that.

Debra, these classes are fabulous...  I remember years ago our daughter wanting to babysit and we had her enroll in one.  She really took it very seriously!  It helps to build confidence too.  Good info....
