Why were Bill Gates & Warren Buffett in Gillette Wyoming?

Gillette is a small northeast Wyoming town with about 30,000 residents.  We have a tight knit community with lots of open spaces.  So when a fleet of Burlington Northern private jets as well as a private jet that could rival the size of any commercial airline that flies out of here... people are going to talk.

So what the heck were Bill Gates and Warren Buffett doing in Gillette Wyoming?  Mr. Gates declined interview with our local newspaper but there has been plenty of speculation as to just what can bring two of the world's richest men here.

Rumor has it that Gates toured a local coal mine (the largest coal reserves in North America surround Gillette).  We are hoping he will be investing some serious money in clean coal technology which would help out our area tremendously.  In the November 11 issue of Rolling Stone magazine Bill Gates gives an interview on his vision for our energy future.

Whatever the reason for the visit it has created a buzz around town that has given this community something to talk about.  Hopefully all of the talk and speculation will lead to the things down the road!

Coal...that is a dirty word to the present administration and both these guys are big supporters. So is there another reason or is obama's support dwindling ??

Wow, I think that is very cool that these guys set down in Gillette.  I would have been out there like a rock-star fan trying to get a peek.

Nicole - The current administration is very scary for this community.  We are assuming that their Obama support is not dwindling but rather they are looking to develop technology to prevent carbon free practices or carbon sequestration.

Jean - We have to admit it's pretty darn cool they were here.

I wouldn't say that Gates and Buffett are big supporters of Obama.  Buffett has been quite critical about obama's economic policies.  Gates for the most part has been staying out of the "global warming" panacea and he's focused on helping people alive today getting medicines and vaccinations.

These guys want to make money and they are good at it so let's hope they invest here and make a big splash and keep the politics out of it.  I mean look at what happened last week.

The two richest people in world flying to the same little town in the middle of nowhere??? There must be something cooking out there.  You know the guy who posted that this isn't about politics ---He's RIGHT---its about business.  To me with all of the time these men have spent in China recently and the fact that China needs coal----there must be a connection.  Buffett owns BNSF and makes large profits from shipping coal.  I have heard rumors that he wants to connect his rail lines with the expanded Panama canal so that American coal companies can ship millions of tons to coal hungry places like India and China.  This is the future of the Coal industry and Buffett wants to position his companies to benefit.  Oil and Coal to China/India is the most important thing to happen to world economics.  Think about 2 billion people wanting A/C, LED TVs, computers etc.  I know Gates is very concerned about raising the standard of living for millions of poor people across the world. So cheap energy fits his agends moreso the "clean" coal.  I agree with that---we should be helping people who need it now rather than focusing on a potential future problem.

Think about our trade deficit----almost a trillion dollars a year---most of it from China.  If we can ship tbillions of tons of coal out there maybe we can even out the deficit and leverage China into higher costs---thus encouraging more American manufacturing!!!!

There is NO downside to this.

Yes, there are positives any way you look at this.  Clean coal, mine-mouth generation, balance of trade, not only for our country, but what about all those empty coal trains returning to Campbell County here in Wyoming?  Raw materials in via that railroad asset, plus economical energy invites recycling operations of many types, plus aluminum smelting if Bauxite could come economically in those empty cars.

We, as a nation, are importers and consumers.  Wyoming, on the other hand, is an exporter of energy in several forms.  Add wind energy and some means of off-peak storage and your imagination can run wild.

The Carbon Dioxide emissions from combustion could be countered by photosynthesis, if the most likely places to irrigate were to be developed.

Let's become producers again and stimulate all the values our nation was built on.  Businesses, small and large, need our support.  Start small, but welcome growth and large developments as well.  Let's try to do it right, but DO IT.

Hey guys,

The reason gates was here was very simple, Money!

Mr. Gates owns 6.5% of the Canadian National railroad, which include the IC ( Illinois Central ). Gates is a supporter of Green Energy and a believer in the Global Warming crowd.

Also, Gates has a lot of money invested in Berkshire Hathaway.

I would be led to speculate that Berkshire / Hathaway will be purchasing a coal mine in the basin shortly.

Either way Gillette will prosper!

There is speculation, after their visiting Black Thunder Mine and its 3 plants near Wright, that some capital is needed to develop a new coal lease in SE Montana.  Mine, Plant & RR need to be built for that to progress.  Clean coal may gain some support as well.  There doesn't appear to be a down side for us in Campbell County and Gillette.
