Fast and The Furious? Not in Elk Grove, CA!

Movies like Fast and The Furious, TV shows like Pimp My Ride, and even video games like Need 4 Speed Underground and Midnight Club, has helped street racing become mainstream.  It's very difficult to drive down the street without seeing a "tricked-out" Honda Civic or Acura Integra.  And with communities like the Franklin Reserve in Elk Grove, CA where neighborhoods are still under development, there are plenty of open, unoccupied streets that are ripe for illegal street racing.

I personally remember going to Grant Line Rd off Highway 99 to watch plenty of illegal street races back in high school.  Illegal street racing has certainly gone high tech since then.  Those who participate either as a racer or as a spectator use their cell phones, police scanners and other devices to avoid arrest.  Even the popular social networking website, MySpace provides information on where to race and how to avoid prosecution.  Street races usually occur late nights on long open roads.  But with the growth of Elk Grove, these open roads are now major thoroughfares that now encompass residential neighborhoods.  Now that I'm a parent and a homeowner, it concerns me that these illegal street races are moving closer and closer towards these neighborhoods.  In some cases, these races can attract up to 100 people.  It is these people's presence that actually fuel such races and allow the race scene to flourish.

The City of Elk Grove as well as the Elk Grove Police Department have launched a campaign a few months ago to educate young drivers about the dangers as well as the legal consequences of illegal street racing within the city limits.  The Elk Grove City Council has enacted a zero tolerance ordinance that targets illegal street racers and spectators.  It also doubles the state guidelines of impounding street racer's vehicles from 30 to 60 days and could mean a $1000 fine in addition to the impound fees and up to 6 months jail time for people within 200 feet of an illegal street race.

The City of Elk Grove has so far won eight awards and two Helen Putnam awards for their educational campaign from the League of California Cities.  The Helen Putnam Award is a prestigious honor that recognizes outstanding efforts and innovative solutions made by city governments each year throughout the state of California.
