Tips for Preparing for Winter

By

The leaves are falling and it is time to get ready for the cooler months ahead. Here are some suggestions to put on your list:

  • Clean the list filter on your dryer after each load of clothes. It will help your clothes dry more efficiently. Also clean the outside dryer vent to make sure the exhaust is not blocked. It could start a fire. Replace the accordion-type duct with rigid or semi-rigid material. This will trap less lint and will not crush or kink as easily.
  • Check the outdoor paint for peeling, cracking and coverage.
  • Check exterior trim, gutters, downspouts. Unclog all blockages.
  • Inspect all caulking, weather stripping, thresholds, transitions and windows.
  • Check the entire outside of the home for small holes and gaps and repair as necessary. This will help keep out wildlife.
  • Check to attic for insulation and leak stains.
  • Remove all the leaves and twigs from the gutters.
  • Check all pipes to prevent freezing.
  • Remove all drain hoses.
  • Winterize outdoor faucets, spigots, and sprinkler systems.
  • Check for mold through out the home and determine the cause so it can be remedied.
  • Open the fireplace damper and inspect the flue. Have the chimney swept.
  • Check for air leaks around light switches and outlets. Add insulation if necessary.
  • Consider a "blanket" for your hot water heater.
  • Changes the furnace and air filter and have the furnace cleaned.
  • Clean and adjust all ceiling fans so that the air flows upward.
  • Be sure to test carbon monoxide detectors and smoke detectors. Replace the batteries if applicable.
  • Water and electricity don't mix. Check all small appliances in the bathroom and kitchen to ensure they are not too close to the water source. Make sure that you have ground fault interrupters within 6 feet of your water source so that no one is "shocked".

We hope these hints are helpful to you and please feel free to give a call if you need help getting these tasks done.
