If a zero down mortgage loan seems out-of-step with what the news media is promoting as a difficult lending environment, remember bad news sells.  If you haven't heard about this loan program publicized by a lender or Realtor it is probalby due to a lack of experience with the loan program or a Loan Officers investors not willing to fund the loan.  As a directly lender I have been originating USDA Loans for years and while the loan take a little longer to process than a standard FHA or conforming loan I understand that this administrative hassle factor is well worth the extra work when the only thing standing between a home buyer and a house is the challenge of a down payment.
