Tonight’s Performing Ensembles

For over a century, the Auburn University Marching Band has captivated audiences across the nation with spectacular performances. Whether playing before the home crowd or away, the Auburn Band has attained a position of national distinction and a reputation for excellence second to none. Band members represent virtually every school and curriculum on the Auburn campus. The Auburn University Marching Band was the 2004 recipient of the Sudler Intercollegiate Marching Band Trophy.  Established by the John Philip Sousa Foundation, this award is presented annually to a bane “…which has made important contributions to the advancement of the performance standards of college marching bands over a number of years.”  This year’s band is the largest ever, with 380 members.

The Auburn University Chamber Choir is the newest choir in the music department. They are an auditioned group of 50 students representing voice majors and various other academic areas throughout the campus. Under the direction of Dr. William Powell, the Choral program has served Auburn University as ambassadors nationally and internationally.  The group’s repertoire consists mostly of moderate to advanced-level choral literature.

The Auburn University Steel Band is a part of the percussion program at Auburn University.  Membership is open to any Auburn student by audition. The Steel Band performs the traditional steel band music of Trinidad and Tobago, called calypso, as well as sambas from Brazil and other forms of Afro-Caribbean music. They appear frequently at a wide variety of university and community functions.

The Auburn University Symphonic Band is the premier performing ensemble in the Auburn Band program.  A select group of 65 players, the band performs a broad and diverse repertoire of standard and contemporary band literature along with occasional transcriptions. In recent years, they have performed numerous times for Alabama Bandmasters Association and Alabama Music Educators Association events, and have undertaken annual tours around the southeast.

The Auburn University Singers is an auditioned group of 36 singers and nine instrumentalists who provide choral entertainment. Now in its 39th year and under the direction of Dr. Dale Farmer, the ensemble has performed for schools, churches, civic groups, and professional organizations around the world.

The Auburn University Jazz Ensemble is an auditioned group of about 20 members. The ensemble consists of saxophones, trumpets, trombones and a rhythm section. Auditions for the Jazz Ensemble take place at the start of each semester and are open to any and all students. The group performs both popular jazz standards and other jazz arrangements for many community and university functions.

Led by director of Choral Activities Dr. William Powell and his wife, Dr. Rosephanye Dunn Powell, the Auburn University Gospel Choir is an auditioned group ranging between 60 and 100 students representing many different academic areas throughout the university. The ensemble has been featured in performance at a variety of national venues, including the 2005 American Orff-Schulwerk Association and the 2006 Southwestern Division Convention of the American Choral Directors Association in St. Louis, Missouri.
