THE HOLIDAYS ARE RAPIDLY APPROACHING, AND MANY HOME OWNERS ARE are wondering should I even think about sprucing up the house? With the economy being what it is, stetching your dollars in a down economy, is important.  So here are a few helpful suggestions of how to get the most bang for you buck.

GOING AGAINST THE FLOW.. Now is a great time to tune up that A/C System.   Getting a better deal sometimes mean timing. When peak season hits demand for certain services rises.  Now that weather has cooled off somewhat-it is a good time to tweak your  A/C system to maximize performance.   Contractors will often lower or adjust their prices off season which means you the consumer gets a better deal.

It is also a good idea to get your duct work inspected for possible leaks and sufficient insulation. Doing it now, before the demand for heat is on the rise, means you may get a better deal. Insulation is one way to cut energy costs in both warm and cool climates. Check with your local utility company-some offer incentives and rebates to home owners to make their homes more energy efficient. There are also some Federal Programs available to lower income households such as the LiHeap Program.

FLOORING- Before Thanksgiving, vendors tend to be slower- keep on the look out for sales and installation specials.  Did you know the average lifespan of carpeting is only 5 years?

If you carpeting is looking old and worn it, cleaning it maybe one option replacing it is another.

Checking the weekly flyers from the Do-It Yourself Home Stores can be an opportunity for you to save big on clearance items.

Also check with local stores-they sometimes get great deals on certain items, which can save you hundreds of dollars.  You will want to compare installation costs when pricing flooring as well.  When the stores are less busy, is when you will get a better deal.

PAINT- NOTHING YOU CAN DO WILL IMPROVE THE WAY A PROPERTY PRESENTS CHEAPER THAN A FRESH COAT OF PAINT.  The temperature is perfect for painting indoors or out.  A fresh coat of paint rejeuvenates a property almost instantly. From worn out and weathered to fresh and clean

A GOOD CLEANING- ELIMINATING THE CLUTTER ON THE CHEAP

You do not have to have deep pockets, to clear the clutter in your house- in fact, it is a great way of making a few extra dollars before the holidays.  You'd be surprised how much stuff you have that you:

1) Do not need

2) Do not Use

3) Will not use in the next year

LANDSCAPING- RAKING UP THE DEAD LEAVES, AND TRIMMING TREES BEFORE THE HOLIDAYS

TRIMMING THE TREES YOU HAVE makes a home look well cared for, and does not cost much.  Garden centers will sometime offer clearance sale items, it doesn't hurt to check from time to add to add to your garden.

Trimming back overgrown trees is both good for your roof, as well as allowing in more light for younger plants- Even something as simple as bleaching the stones can brighten the appearance of a garden area.

TRANSFORMING CLUTTER TO CASH...

There is a value to your unwanted items.  Sure there is the tax deduction benefit, but if you are unemployed or under-employed that is not likely to help you much- instead, consider transforming your clutter to cash with free ads on Craigslist, or by having a yard sale.  It serves both to get rid of what you don't need and makes room for what you do need.

So with the Holidays rapidly approaching- what can you do with little money to make a difference in how your home looks and feels?  You can do a lot for a little.

Ellen, funny you should mention it...but I just got both my A/c units and heaters checked out today.  It is still warm enough to use our A/C...but I'm sure that will soon change! :)

I think clutter could be the leader, however paint would be almost a tie.

I agree with the less clutter=less stress.  I need to do a lot more decluttering.  Sometimes, it is just enough hours in the day.
