Staging Vacants: RUGS! RUGS! RUGS!

Take a look at the photos above.  The "glue" that holds all of these warm and enticing spaces together is the accent introduced when area rugs are added to the design mix.  In each photo as we set out to stage a vacant home we added area rugs as the final ingredient.

Area rugs can perform magic for a room in many ways:

  1. Add lightness to a dark space
  2. Add warmth to a cool space
  3. Control noise in an empty space
  4. Create intimacy in an overly large and open space

These rooms were all staged by Design to Market LLC with items from our inventory of furniture and decorative items.  For more information about our staging services and rental options, call Jo Potvin at 513-265-0952.

Great inventory - for sure some savvy homeowner or Realtor should jump at the chance to hire Design to Market LLC. I always like the touch a good big area rug lends to a room -  intimacy and softness and a sense of purpose to the arrangement - let alone a sorely needed shot of color.

Jo - Great point and great post!!!  If you have any before picture, include those and post them in the Staging Before & After Group as I'd love to feature it there.

Jo -- I love using rugs.  You are right, they ground a space and add a cozy feel.  I must say, your pictures are fabulous!!! Nice job!

Jo:  I also like using rugs, but don't use them that often.  For older homes with smaller rooms, even a 6x9 can look big.  I wonder about people walking into a "room", seeing "a rug", and deciding that their rug at home is the same size (when it could be acres bigger) and that the house is too small.  It is just incredible what assumptions are leapt to by buyers.

Just my two cents, from DC!

I think this is a great post. Rugs also can anchor down the room. But personally I don't like to put rugs in small space because it eats up space visually.

Cheers,

Hi Jo,

I'm a fan of rugs too. Where do you get yours? I've had fairly good luck at Marshalls but I could use some more large (9x12s and larger).

Jo - looks great.  Where do you get your rugs.  I have been working on rentals but so far haven't been able to arrange any so have had to purchase them.  I like the way rugs can "anchor" furniture although I tend to agree with Cindy when it comes to putting carpets in small spaces.

Thanks for all of the comments.  i agree with the concern over rugs in small areas.  But on the other hand, large rooms and open floor plans often scream for the addition of rugs.  I was asked wher i buy my rugs and my answer is EVERYWHERE!

A list:

  1. Pier 1
  2. Clearance page in catalogs
  3. Home Goods
  4. Home Depot and Loews
  5. Rug dealers

Good rugs are not cheap but they definitely add to the finished look!

I don't use area rugs in smaller spaces that may make the rooms look choppy. These rooms are large and the rugs definitely define the space, they look awesome.

I love the first picture the most....oooo, I would love to live there.

Great pictures. The rugs work great. I may have to rethink my own reasons for not using them to often! I tend to shy away from using rugs for the same reasons already listed.  They can make a room look smaller or be a distraction because of the design.  In the right setting the rugs can make or break a space.  Your rugs definitely made the space!

Jo, all your photos look great!   I particularily love the first one.  Can't image that room without a rug.  It would seem still cold and not cozy at all.  In large homes such as this one appears to be, the echo effect is often present.  If there are no drapes, than a rug really helps to deaden the echo.  Which in turn helps create that warm and fuzzy feeling for buyers.

Jo,

I am a firm believer in the 'value' of adding area rugs to vacants in order to define a space, or add warmth, color and texture to a room.  You can even bypass window treatments if area rugs are used correctly.

Your pictures prove that you certainly know how to use rugs to the room's advantage!

Evelyn,

It is ironic that you came upon this post.  My project today has been to locate some more nice oriental rugs.  It's now a year and a half later and I am still a real believer in the power of rugs.   We have really increased our inventery since writing that piece.  I find that 4x 6, 5 x 8, 8 x10...all of them are important to us as we work to create that pulled together feel in the rooms we stage.

I am always open to tips on good sources for rugs!
