You’ve done it – you know, made a wish on the first star you see as night falls. It goes something like this:
“Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight, I wish I may, I wish I might have this wish I wish tonight.”
Yesterday evening, I was on the deck enjoying the crisp evening air, a cold beer, and a cigar. The moon was up and I saw my first star of the evening, so I made a wish. Then, I realized I was looking at a planet, Jupiter. It made we wonder – was that wish made in vain or do planets count? Just to be sure, I waited until I finally saw a “first star” and made my wish again – you can’t be too careful with that sort of thing.
The next thing that occurred to me was that (for me, at least) it wasn’t really a wish but a heartfelt prayer to our Lord. So, I’m thinking that maybe it doesn’t matter it it’s prompted by a star, a planet, or just a random thought. What counts is that the wish / prayer is given with the understanding that it is a humble request and how or when it may be answered depends upon the infinite wisdom of God.
