The Road Less Traveled - Roads That Don't Show up on Madeline Island Maps

The mapping of roads and landmarks on Madeline Island definitely needs a facelift.

Thanks to the few maps we DO have available, most tourist visitors to Madeline Island are at least familiar with our most-traveled roads, such as Big Bay Road, North and South Shore Roads, Middle Road, Hagen Road and Benjamin Boulevard.

But what about the growing number of Island roads that do NOT appear on area maps?

Some roads are sometimes incorrectly spelled, such as Black's Shanty Road (often misnamed "Black Shanty Road")?  Others just don't show up at all on the maps published by the Madeline Island Ferry Line or on those charming place mats at the Bell Street Tavern.

Some examples of missing roads and landmarks:

Equaysayway Lane - Off Old Fort Road in the Grant's Point area of Madeline Island.

Capser Road - Also part of the Grant's Point area, a dead-end road that runs more or less parallel to South Shore Road

Mondamin Trail - This roadway connects the golf course/marina area and the Madeline Island Music Camp with South Shore Road.

Raymond Road - A roadway which connects with South Shore Road, generally in the Grant's Point vicinity. Raymond Road connects with Spruce Lane and Oak Lane, and forms a "T" with O'Brien Lane.

Islewood Road - A private road that serves eight lakefront parcels off South Shore Road

Miller Farm Road - Off Middle Road and extending in the direction of the golf course

Schoolhouse Road - Connects Big Bay Road with Steamboat Point, on the northeast end of Madeline Island

Chippewa Trail - A dead-end road off Schoolhouse Road, in the Amnicon Point area

Kron-Dahlin Lane - Roadway to the Amnicon Beach Association properties at the northeast tip of Madeline Island

Stockton Road and Cramer Lane - Both private association roads that serve the North Shore Heights development on the north end of the Island

Hidden Beach - Just north of North Shore Heights and south of Steamboat point

There are other missing roads and Island landmarks, of course and this is nothing more than a partial list.  But it seems to me that our Madeline Island maps are badly in need of updating.

Eric: I like maps--always have. I used to be the kid in class who not only loved to draw maps but mine were always in full color!!! Now, about your quandry, why not have someone draw a map from an outline of one you already have--or you could do it...make it look like a "primitive" map and then make it beautiful with colors and all kinds of of neat landmarks---Doesn't have to be too neat; it would look better if it looks like it was drawn by a child---then copy it and fold them up--you could even have your name and contact numbers rubber stamped on them....good luck, anyway...I have to go draw a map of the Hamptons!

Paula - I can see that we're going to have to start making our own maps.  I don't see anyone rushing to update the maps we now have.
