We do a lot of hardwood refinishing jobs, and usually they are pretty standard. But, every once in a while something bizarre happens. A couple of months ago, I had a super nice customer in Bronxville NY who was moving into a new apartment (a co-op). She hadn't moved in yet (and couldn't as the floors needed to dry).
On the last day, my installer was baffled as the front door was broken - kind of smashed. Well apparently, someone smelled something "funny" (which was just the polyurethane) and called the fire department. They apparently thought their was a fire and broke down the door.
I still don't understand how trained firemen can't tell the difference between polyurethane and smoke (or even gas). I also don't understand why the co-op board didn't call my customer - either to ask her what was going on...or even to tell her the damage that was created. It's also strange since they made her file all this paper work weeks in advance about the work being done and filed all of the info on our licenses/insurance (as well as all the other people doing work on her place).
